Speech Writing

n
The function of speech writing is to convey
a thought or message to a reader with
appropriate punctuation and expression. It is
not that different from narrative writing in
other forms. However, students must
understand some different punctuation and
writing structures
How to write a speech?

– Step 1: Plan the structure of your speech. Describe your main points for each section.
– Step 2: Develop your outline main points. Focus less on what words to use. Be creative
and just write it all out!
– Step 3: Edit and polish what you have written until you have a cohesive first draft
– Step 4: Practice, practice, practice. The more you practice your speech, the more you'll
notice which sections need revision, which transitions need to be improved, and which
sentences are challenging.
– Step 5: Practice and revise your speech until it has a natural flow and you feel it is
ready for delivery.
Structure your speech

– Divide your speech into three parts: Introduction, main body, and conclusion. By
doing so, you will help your audience understand your point. In each section you’re
trying to achieve a different aim:
• In your introduction, you should explain who you are and what you are discussing.
Next, you want to capture their attention.
• The main body of your speech is where you make your arguments. This main body
can be broken down into 2-3 points, and each point can be divided into a paragraph.
• This conclusion concludes the essay. Your conclusion should summarize your
words.
How to start a speech?
.

– Quote-Opening with a relevant quote can help set the tone for the rest of your speech.
– “What If” Scenario-Immediately drawing your audience into your speech works . Asking a “what if”
question invites the audience to follow your thought process.
– “Imagine” Scenario-A similar method, but more relevant for sensational examples.  It puts your
audience directly into the presentation by allowing each member to visualize an extraordinary
scenario.
– Can you tell any other interesting ways to start your speech.
How to organize a speech?

– Chronological order-Main points organized according to a timeline or

pattern.
– Spatial Order-Using a directional pattern for main points.
– Problem Solution Order-Discuss a problem in detail and then discuss a
solution, every solution must be do able and but it should not cause
another problem.
– Casual Order-Discuss the cause of a problem and then discuss the effect.
– Topical Order-Each main point is divided into sub points and
supported by facts and data.
Tips

You can vary the sentence structure. Keep it short. Include occasional long ones
to keep the audience engaged.
 Whenever possible, use active voice instead of passive voice. You will sound
more powerful if you use active voice.
 Make sure you repeat key points often. Besides helping your audience remember
something, repetition makes them more aware of central points.
 Share your personal experiences to boost your points and connect with the
audience.
How to conclude a speech?

 The best way to conclude your speech is with a personal story or a story that
illustrates how the content affected other people.
 Providing a surprising fact can re-engage the audience's attention, which is
likely to fade by the end of the presentation.
 Using a quote is a relatively easy way to conclude your speech. A quote that
hasn't been heard before will be most effective.

  Take your audience back over what you have said, but don't just list your
ideas; show how they are related and how they support your main point.
EXAMPLE:
You are Ali/Alia, Head girl / Head boy of your school. You are deeply disturbed by the rising cases of aggressive behavior of students in
your school. You decide to speak during the morning assembly about it. Write a speech on ‘Indiscipline in Schools’. (150 – 200 words)
INDISCIPLINE IN SCHOOLS
It has been reported that number of fights and cases of bullying has gone up tremendously in the last few months in our school.
Good morning to one and all present here. Today, I, Ali/Alia, your head boy/girl stand before you to throw light upon the grave issue of
“Increasing Indiscipline in Schools”.
It has been brought into lime light that disobedience of teachers, bullying, fights with peers, truancy and insults is becoming a common trend.
Not only this, there have been complaints of parents witnessing a shift in their children’s attitude. This is resulting in a lot of children getting hurt
emotionally, mentally and physically. The impact this attitude is having on kids at early age is disastrous and irreversible.
Not to forget the damage that has been done to the school property. Stealing chalks, scribbling on desks, walls and washroom doors, destroying
CCTV cameras and the list goes on. By doing this, we are only letting us deprive ourselves of the amenities being provided to us.
After a lot of meetings, lack of proper guidance, excessive use of social media and peer pressure have been observed to be the root causes of the
problem. The counsel is taking steps to improve the situation. Life skill classes are being made mandatory for everyone. Teachings will include
counselling, motivation and inculcating friendly values. Seminars for parents and students will be regularly organized. A counsellor to help you
all share your feelings, grudges and sharing your personal problem is being made available. We are doing everything we can and expect the same
from you.
So, let’s join our hands together and build an environment where we encourage, motivate, help and be kind to each other for we are good and
civilized beings capable of a lot of love.
