Quanti Quali - Choosing and Formulating Title

This document provides information on quantitative and qualitative research methods. Quantitative research uses computational techniques and numerical data to objectively and systematically study observable phenomena. It employs surveys, experiments, and observations to collect quantifiable data. Qualitative research seeks to understand meanings and experiences through exploratory methods like interviews, focus groups, ethnography, and case studies. It aims to explain how and why through descriptive data. The key difference is that quantitative research tests hypotheses and asks how many/how much, while qualitative research explores ideas and asks how/why.

QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE RESEARCH

WHAT IS A QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH?

 Quantitative research is an objective, systematic, and empirical
investigation of observable phenomena through the use of
computational techniques.

 This type of research involves collections of numerical

information that can be tabulated.

It is used to quantify the problem by way of generating numerical

data or data that can be transformed into usable statistics.
DATA COLLECTION METHODS
 SURVEYS
A quantitative method for collecting information from a pool of respondents by asking multiple
questions. This research type includes the recruitment of individuals, collection, and analysis of
data.

 EXPERIMENTS
Conducted using a scientific approach using two or more variables.
The first variable is a constant that you can manipulate to see the
differences caused in the second variable.
Most studies under quantitative research methods are experimental in nature.

 OBSERVATIONS
The observation method of data collection involves seeing people in a certain setting or place
at a specific time and day.
Essentially, researchers study the behavior of the individuals or surroundings in which they are
analyzing.
WHAT IS A QUALITATIVE RESEARCH?
This is carried out when you wish to understand meanings, look at, describe
and understand experience, ideas, beliefs and values, intangibles in a
subjective perspective.

Research following this is approach is exploratory and seeks to explain “how”

and “why”

Qualitative data is typically descriptive data. When you think of qualitative data,
think of the word ‘quality’ because in qualitative analysis are taking a deep quality
look at a phenomenon.
DATA COLLECTION METHODS
INTERVIEW
involves asking open-ended questions to converse with
respondents and collect elicit data about a subject.

FOCUS GROUPS
A focus group discussion involves gathering people from similar
backgrounds or experiences together to discuss a specific topic
of interest.
It is a form of qualitative research where questions are. asked
about their perceptions attitudes, beliefs, opinion or ideas.
ETHNOGRAPHY

Ethnographic research is a qualitative method where researchers observe

and/or interact with a study's participants in their real-life environment.

CASE STUDIES

A detailed study of a specific subject, such as person, group, places,

events, organization or phenomenon.

LITERATURE REVIEW

A literature review is a survey of scholarly sources (such as books, journal articles, and
theses)related to a specific topic or research question
