Subject Orienta-Tion: General Biology 1

This document outlines the subject orientation for a General Biology 1 course covering 5 modules over 2 semesters. The course is designed to enhance understanding of life processes at the cellular and molecular levels as well as energy transformation in organisms. Students will demonstrate understanding of cell biology, the cell cycle, transport mechanisms, biological molecules, and energy transformation. Performance tasks will assess students' abilities to model cell structures, simulate membrane transport, and create a video explaining mitosis and human development from a single cell.

SUBJECT TITLE: General Biology 1
SUBJECT DESCRIPTION:
This subject is designed to enhance the
understanding of the principles and concepts in the
study of biology, particularly life processes at the
cellular and molecular levels. It also covers the
transformation of energy in organisms.
PRE-REQUISITE:
None
TIME FRAME:

The learners demonstrate an understanding of:

Module 1 INTRODUCTION TO CELL BIOLOGY
Module 2 CELL CYCLE
Module 3 CELLULAR TRANSPORT MECHANISMS
Module 4 BIOLOGICAL MOLECULES
Module 5 ENERGY TRANSFORMATION
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
The learners shall be able to:

1. compare and contrast the different parts of a plant cell, an
animal cell, and a bacterial cell through creating digital 3D
structures;
2. identify the cell membrane, its parts and functions by
simulating the passage of substances through it; and
3. relate the importance of cell division to the development of
an organism through a time-lapse video.

PERFORMANCE TASKS
FIRST SEMESTER – FIRST TERM
PERFORMANCE TASK No. 1

 Transfer Goal:
Students will be able to independently use their learning to:
Understand how mitosis results to the development of an individual.
 Goal:
To explain how human starts out as a single cell and how this cell un-
dergoes mitosis.
 Role:
Classmate
 Audience:
The class
Situation:
After biology class one day, you explain to a friend who isn’t in
your biology class that all humans start out as a single cell. Your
friend is doubtful, so you decide to create a time-lapse video
using digital images of a fertilized egg developing into a human
being to prove your point. Narrate the video, explaining the
specific changes that occur between each developmental
stage. You can also mention those certain stages where errors
can occur in human development.
Product:
A time-lapse video using digital images of a fertilized egg
developing into a human being.
Standards:
Refer to the given rubric
PERFORMANCE TASKS
FIRST SEMESTER – FIRST TERM
PERFORMANCE TASK No. 2
Transfer Goal:
Students will be able to independently use their learning to:
Create and apply their scientific and technological skills and knowledge in
dealing with the reality of life - scarcity of water at present and in the near
future. .

Goal:
To creatively think and devise an experiment on how to harness saltwater
to make it purified and drinking water.

Role:
Inventor/Scientist

Audience:
Leaders of the National and Local Government
Situation:
There is an impending water crisis and the government
has placed all scientific organizations on high alert to
resolve this issue. Your team is assigned to try and
apply various reverse osmosis technology in order to
harness seawater and create purified potable water.
Devise an experiment to showcase this technology.

Product:
An experiment that will showcase reverse osmosis
technology, an innovation.

Standards:
Refer to the given rubric
