College Math Lesson 65 Ch.5.2

This lesson teaches students how to add and subtract polynomials by combining like terms. It provides examples of adding and subtracting terms with variables such as x, y, and z. To add polynomials, students are instructed to combine like terms. To subtract polynomials, students are told to change the signs of the terms in the second polynomial and then add it to the first polynomial. The lesson emphasizes arranging polynomials so that like terms are aligned before combining them.

LO: SWBAT Add and subtract polynomials.

(Objective 3)
College Math
Lesson 65
LO: SWBAT Add and subtract polynomials. (Objective 3)
Lesson:
EXAMPLE 1:
 Combine like terms.
a. 2z4 + 3x4 + z4 – 9x4 b. 3t + 4r – 4t – 8r c. 5x2z – 3x3z2 + 8x2z + 12x3z2
LO: SWBAT Add and subtract polynomials. (Objective 3)
Lesson:
EXAMPLE 1:
 Combine like terms.
a. 2z4 + 3x4 + z4 – 9x4 b. 3t + 4r – 4t – 8r c. 5x2z – 3x3z2 + 8x2z + 12x3z2

a. 2z4 + 3x4 + z4 – 9x4 = 2z4 + z4 + 3x4 – 9x4

= 3z4 – 6x4
b. 3t + 4r – 4t – 8r = 3t – 4t + 4r – 8r
= –t – 4r
c. 5x2z – 3x3z2 + 8x2z + 12x3z2
= 5x2z + 8x2z – 3x3z2 + 12x3z2
= 13x2z + 9x3z2
LO: SWBAT Add and subtract polynomials. (Objective 3)

Lesson:

Adding Polynomials
To add two polynomials, combine like terms.
LO: SWBAT Add and subtract polynomials. (Objective 3)
Lesson:
EXAMPLE 2
Add.

a. (–5p3 + 6p2) + (8p3 – 12p2) b. –6r5 + 2r3 – r2

+ 8r5 – 2r3 + 5r2
LO: SWBAT Add and subtract polynomials. (Objective 3)
Lesson:
EXAMPLE 2

Add.
a. (–5p3 + 6p2) + (8p3 – 12p2)

 Use commutative and associative properties to rearrange the polynomials so that like terms are together. Then
use the distributive property to combine like terms.

(–5p3 + 6p2) + (8p3 – 12p2)

= –5p3 + 8p3 + 6p2 – 12p2
= 3p3 – 6p2
LO: SWBAT Add and subtract polynomials. (Objective 3)
Lesson:

EXAMPLE 2 continued:

You can add polynomials vertically by placing like terms in columns.

b. –6r5 + 2r3 – r2
8r5 – 2r3 + 5r2
2r5 + 4r2

 The solution is 2r5 + 4r2

LO: SWBAT Add and subtract polynomials. (Objective 3)
Lesson:

Subtracting Polynomials
To subtract two polynomials, add the first polynomial and
the negative of the second polynomial.

Lesson:
EXAMPLE 3

Subtract
a. (p4 + p3 + 5) – (3p4 + 5p3 + 2) b. 2k3 – 3k2 – 2k + 5

 4k3 + 6k2 – 5k + 8
LO: SWBAT Add and subtract polynomials. (Objective 3)
Lesson:
EXAMPLE 3
Subtract
a. (p4 + p3 + 5) – (3p4 + 5p3 + 2)

Change every sign in the second polynomial and add.

(p4 + p3 + 5) – (3p4 + 5p3 + 2)
= p4 + p3 + 5 – 3p4  5p3  2
= p4 – 3p4 + p3 – 5p3 + 5 – 2
= –2p4 – 4p3 + 3
LO: SWBAT Add and subtract polynomials. (Objective 3)
Lesson:
Example 3 continued:

To subtract vertically, write the first polynomial above the second, lining
up like terms in columns.
Change all the signs in the second polynomial and add.
b. 2k – 3k – 2k + 5
3 2
2k3 – 3k2 – 2k + 5
 4k + 6k – 5k + 8
3 2
– 4k3
– 6k 2
+ 5k – 8
2k3  9k2 + 3k 3
