L1.1 - Subsets of A Line

This document provides an overview of basic geometry terms related to points, lines, and planes. It defines and provides examples of intersecting lines, parallel lines, concurrent lines, skew lines, line segments, rays, and congruent segments. It also discusses set operations involving lines and its subsets, including union and intersection. The objectives are for students to illustrate subsets of a line, perform set operations, and contribute to class discussions on line topics. A quiz asks students to describe geometric relationships using words like parallel, coplanar, and concurrent and through symbols. An assignment provides additional practice activities.

OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
Illustrates subsets of a line. (M7GE-IIIa-2) (MELC)

a) formulate the definition of parallel lines, intersecting lines,

concurrent lines, skew lines, segment, ray, and congruent
segments;
b) perform the set operations on segments and rays;
c) contribute meaningfully to class discussion about the subsets of
a line.
Some of the basic geometric terms on lines are
the following:
1. Intersecting Lines
2. Parallel Lines
3. Concurrent Lines
4. Skew Lines
Intersecting
Lines

Intersecting lines are two lines with a common point

Intersecting
Lines
The common point of it is
Point Q, and its two lines
which intersect are the
Lines m and n.

Therefore, we can write and read as:

Lines m and n intersect at point Q.
Parallel Lines

define a
parallel line?

Parallel lines are lines in the same

plane that do not intersect.
Parallel Lines

A parallel line is two lines that

has same size, length, and it is a
straight line. Which a parallel
line symbolizes a straight two
lines
Parallel lines symbol is

Line m and line n.

Therefore,
Concurrent
Lines
Concurrent lines are
three or more lines that
have a common point.

line m, line r, and line l

Therefore, we can write and read it as:

Lines l, m, and r are concurrent lines.
Concurrent
Lines
What if line m becomes line n, then
line r becomes line c, and line l
becomes line k.
How do I write and read it?

line n, line c, and line k

Therefore, we can write and read it as:

Lines n, c, and k are concurrent lines.
SKEW
LINES
What is skew lines?

Skew lines are lines in space that are not in the same
plane. They do not intersect and are not parallel.
SKEW Lines

The ceiling which is line l

and the floor that is line m.

therefore, we can say that the

lines l and m are skew lines.
The line segment and the
ray are some of the subsets
of a line. A segment has two
endpoints while a ray has
only one endpoint and is
extended endlessly in one
direction.
LINE
SEGMENT
Is part of a line that has two
endpoints.

The segments with endpoints are A and B. We could

now denote by In notation, we write it as or simply
AB. We can also name it as or BA, which it is set
consisting of distinct points A and B.
LINE
SEGMENT
If I change the letters A and B, to be Y and Z.
we can name now as?

Y Z

The segments with endpoints are Y and Z. We could

now denote by In notation, we write it as or simply
YZ. We can also name it as or ZY, which it is set
consisting of distinct points Y and Z.
CONGRUENT LINE

What is congruent line?

Congruent lines in geometry refer to the segments

which are identical in their measure. They are 1-
dimensional superimposable segments having
equal lengths. Congruent lines can have different
alignments and orientations.
CONGRUENT LINE

symbol of a
congruent is .
RAY

Ray is part of a line but has only

one endpoint and extends endlessly
in one direction. We name a ray by
its endpoint and one of its points.
RAY
Ray AB is the set of points consisting of and all
points C such that B is between A and C.

What is the symbol of a ray?

A line with only one endpoint.

A is called the endpoint of the ray. The symbol together its points will be is
used to name ray AB. We can also name it as ray AC.⃗ 𝐴𝐶
But remember that the figure is ray AB or name it
as ray AC. It is not correct to name it as ray BA or
ray CA. in notation, we write
SET OPERATIONS
INVOLVING
LINE and its SUBSETS
UNION of SEGMENTS and RAY:

is the set of all points on the ray DE and

segment CF. Thus, all these points determine
ray
INTERSECTION OF SEGMENTS and RAY:

is the set of all points common to ray and ray The

common points are the points on the segment BE.

RECAP

1. What are the other basic geometric terms on points and lines?
The intersecting lines, Parallel lines, Concurrent lines, and skew lines.

2. How about subsets of line?

Line segment, congruent segments and ray.

3. What are the differences of line segment, congruent segments, and

ray?
Line segments has two endpoints while a ray has only one
endpoint, and segments are congruent if they have the same
length.
