with Sewing
Machine
A sewing machine is an
equipment used to combine
fabrics together and to
create different styles of
garments.
Parts of the Sewing Machine
The typical model of a sewing machine is
composed of three parts:
1. The head
2. The cabinet
3. The stand
A. The head
The two major parts of the head are the following:
1. The arm holds the mechanisms that are essential in
driving the needle and in handling the upper thread.
The following are the different parts of the arm:

a. Spool pin – is the thread holder.

b. Presser bar lifter – moves the presser foot.


c. Presser foot – holds the fabric in
place while sewing.
d. Tension regulator – controls the
looseness and tightness of stitches.
e. Thread take-up lever – releases
the thread and interlocks with the
bobbin thread.
f. Needle bar – holds the needle in
place.
g. Bobbin winder – controls
the bobbin while winding
thread.
h. Balance wheel – sets the
mechanism in motion.
i. Stitch regulator – checks
the length of the stitches.
j. Upper thread tension
k. Belt – connects the balance
wheel to the drive wheel.
l. Needle clamp – holds tightens
the needle.
m. Machine needle – is a
slender tool attached in the
needle clamp used for sewing.
n. Thread guides – keeps the
thread in position.
◦2. The bed is the flat portion of
the head where the machine
stands. It has the mechanisms
for lower threading. It
supports the stitching process.
◦The following are the parts of
the bed:
a. Bobbin – is a metal spool for
winding thread.
b. Bobbin case – holds the bobbin.
c. Feed dog – moves the fabric while
sewing.
d. Slide plate – is a movable plate that
covers the shuttle and bobbin case.
e. Throat plate – is the windows of the
feed dog and it is where the bobbin
threads come out.
f. Shuttle – holds the bobbin case
while sewing.
B. The cabinet
This contains the drawers and the
cover or extension leaf.
C. The stand
This is the lower part of the sewing
machine. It consists of the following:
a. Drive/band wheel – leads the balance
wheel through the belt connection.
b. Treadle drives – is where the feet are stationed
to drive the band wheel through the pitman rod.
c. Belt guide – holds the belt
to its place.
d. Drive/band wheel crank –
moves the band wheel.
e. Pitman rod – holds the
treadle to band wheel crank.
f. Legs – support the cabinet
of the machine.
Precautionary Measures in Using the
Sewing Machine
1. Watch your fingers. Your eyes should be looking at what you
are sewing.
2. Use the appropriate needle according to the type of fabric
for smooth sewing.
3. Proper body posture must be observed at all times during
the sewing activity.
4. Avoid sewing over pins.
5. Sew in a well-lighted place.
6. Put all the sewing tools in their proper places
so that you can easily get them when needed.
7. Clean the sewing machine regularly.
8. Before using the sewing machine, make sure
that you know how to operate it.
9. Have the presence of mind when working
with the sewing machine.
