Unifying Themes in The Study of Life

This document discusses several unifying themes in biology, including: - Organisms are made of cells that interact and specialize to form tissues and carry out functions. - Form and function are related, as seen in the aerodynamic shape of bird wings. - Organisms reproduce their own kind through inheritance of genetic information in DNA. - All organisms interact with their environment and obtain energy from food sources to perform life functions like growth and reproduction. - Organisms regulate internal conditions and adapt over generations to better survive in their environment through natural evolution.

UNIFYING THEMES IN THE

STUDY OF LIFE
LESSON 1.2
BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS
• “ THE WHOLE IS GREATER THAN THE SUM OF ITS PART”. IT CAPTURES THE IMPORTANCE OF HOW
A COMBINATION OF PARTS CAN FORM A MORE COMPLEX ORGANIZATION CALLED SYSTEM.
THE CELLULAR BASIS OF LIFE
• ALL ORGANISMS ARE MADE OF CELLS. MOST MULTICELLULAR ORGANISMS HAVE CELLS THAT
ARE SPECIALIZED FOR DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS. TWO EXAMPLES OF SPECIALIZED CELLS IN
YOUR BODY ARE YOUR MUSCLE CELLS,WHICH CONTRACT AND ENABLE YOU TO MOVE , AND
YOUR NERVE CELLS,WHICH TRANSMIT IMPULSES THAT CONTROL YOUR MUSCLES.
• SEVERAL TYPES OF TISSUE TOGETHER MALE UP A STRUCTURE CALLED ORGAN.
• A MULTICELLULAR ORGANISM’S DEVELOPMENT AND SURVIVAL ARE BASED ON THE FUNCTIONS
AND INTERACTIONS OF IT MANY CELLS.
FORM AND FUNCTION
• THE AERODYNAMIC SHAPE OF BIRD’S WING IS A LIVING EXAMPLE OF THE FORM-FITS-
FUNCTION THEME.
REPRODUCTION AND INHERITANCE
• “LIKE BEGETS LIKE” IS AN OLD SAYING THAT DESCRIBE THE ABILITY OF ORGANISM TO REPRODUCE THEIR OWN KIND.
• RECALL ALSO THAT GENES ARE MADE OF INFORMATION-RICH-MOLECULES CALLED DNA.
INTERACTION WITH THE ENVIRONMENT
• NO ORGANISM IS COMPLETELY ISOLATED FROM ITS SURROUNDINGS. AS PART OF ECOSYSTEM
EACH ORGANISM INTERACTS CONTINUOUSLY WITH ITS ENVIRONMENT.
ENERGY AND LIFE
• MOVING,GROWING,REPRODUCING AND OTHER ACTIVITIES OF LIFE REQUIRES ORGANISM TO
PERFORM WORK. WORK DEPENDS ON THE SOURCE OF ENERGY. ENERGY IS OBTAIN IN
CHEMICAL FORM IN SUGARS,FATS AND OTHER “FUEL-LIKE” MOLECULES IN YOUR FOOD.
REGULATION
• THE ABILITY OF ORGANISMS TO REGULATE THEIR INTERNAL CONDITIONS IS AN EXAMPLE OF
HOMEOSTASIS OR “STEADY STATE”. A MECHANISM THAT MAKES ORGANISM REGULATES
THEIR INTERNAL CONDITION,DESPITE CHANGES IN THEIR EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT.
ADAPTATION
• AN ADAPTATION IN AN INHERITED TRAIT THAT HELPS THE ORGANISM’S ABILITY TO SURVIVE
AND REPRODUCE IN ITS PARTICULAR ENVIRONMENT.
• IT IS THE CHANGE IN SPECIES OVER GENERATIONS IN ORDER TO BETTER SURVIVE IN THE
ENVIRONMENT.
EVOLUTION
NATURAL EVOLUTION IS THE MECHANISM BY WHICH EVOLUTION OCCURS. THE TERM
EVOLUTION MEANS “A PROCESS OF CHANGE”.
BIOLOGY AND SOCIETY
• MORE THAN EVER BEFORE, MODERN BIOLOGY IS CHANGING HUMAN’S EVERYDAY LIVES. NEW
FINDING ABOUT DNA AFFECT SUCH FIELDS AS MEDICINE AND AGRICULTURE.
ACTIVITY 2
PLEASE USE THE WEBSITE TO COMPLETE THE TASKS BELOW:

IN GROUPS YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING:

1. PART A: MAKE A TIMELINE OF MAJOR EVENTS OF LIFE. BE SURE TO INCLUDE THE PICTURE OF
THE EVENT NEAR THE TIME OCCURS.
2. PART B: IN THE WEBSITE TEXT , READ AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS RELATED TO THE MAJOR
EVENTS.
