INTRODUCTION
•LOCATION | Singapore
•PROJECT NAME | Jewel Changi Airport
•ARCHITECTS | Safdie Architects
•LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT | PWP Landscape Architecture
•AREA | 135700 m²
•COMPLETION | 2018

•Jewel Changi Airport (also known as Jewel or Jewel Changi) is a Nature- Moshe Safdie
themed entertainment and retail complex on the inside of Changi Airport,
Singapore, linked to three of its passenger terminals. Fulfilling its mission as a
connector between the existing terminals, Jewel combines two environments—
an intense marketplace and a paradise garden—to create a new community-
centric typology as the heart, and soul, of Changi Airport.
•Jewel is an integrated project at the Singapore Airport that creates a multi-
sensory experience of nature within a climate-controlled glass dome.
•Jewel weaves together an experience of being in nature with culture and
leisure facilities, dramatically asserting the idea of the airport as an uplifting
and vibrant urban center, and echoing Singapore’s reputation as “the City in
the Garden.”
SHISEIDO FOREST VALLEY
PALM GARDEN
•Jewel represents an innovation in the world of lifestyle/retail design, with a one-
of-a-kind relationship between garden and marketplace.
•Jewel includes gardens, attractions, a hotel, about 300 retail and dining outlets, as
well as early baggage check-in aviation facilities. It covers a total gross floor area
of 135,700 m2, spanning 10 storeys – five above-ground and five basement levels.
•Four cardinal axes—north, south, east, and west—are reinforced by four gateway
gardens, which orient visitors and offer visual connections to the internal
surroundings and other airport terminals.
•The toroid-shaped roof has more than 9,000 pieces of glass spanning 200 by 150
meters with a sloped oculus as the mouth of the waterfall acting as "a
continuation of the building
•supported only intermittently along the rim of the garden, the integrated structure,
and the façade system allows for a near column-free interior.
•Its attractions include the Shiseido Forest Valley, an indoor garden spanning
five storeys, and the Canopy Park at the topmost level, featuring gardens and
leisure facilities , all under one roof.
•Jewel is slated to receive Singapore’s GreenMark Platinum status. The building’s
efficient displacement ventilation system regulates the thermal comfort for
occupants as well as the vast array of interior planting within.
LANDSCAPE
• More than 200 different species of trees and flora
•A forest of 1,400 trees provides greenery and shade.
•This restorative mecca filled with 2,500 trees and 100,000
shrubs not only revitalizes weary international travelers but is
also open to the public.
•As many studies have shown,
just 10 minutes of immersion in nature can reduce stress, resto
re cognitive ability, and improve mood
.
•Throughout the biosphere-like terminal, PWP selected some
200 species of mostly-highland plant species, calibrating them
to the giant torus’ unique conditions where temperatures and
humidity levels are slightly cooler than outside.
•“Air movement, humidity, and natural light have all been
balanced.”
•In addition to hosting some 300 shops and restaurants and a
transit hotel, the terminal connects to the city’s public bus
system.
• Pedestrian bridges and an inter-terminal train link passengers
and visitors to the airport’s many gates.
RAIN
VORTEX
•HSBC Rain Vortex: At the apex of the glass roof is an oculus that
showers water down to the centre of the building, creating the HSBC
Rain Vortex, the world’s tallest indoor waterfall. Rainwater is funnelled
into the waterfall and harvested for landscape irrigation systems.
•Recirculating rain water is pumped to the roof to free fall through a
round hole at up to 37,850 liters per minute to a basement-level
pool.An acrylic funnel at the bottom prevents splashing and insulates
the sound of the cascade.
•The Rain Vortex, sponsored as the HSBC Rain Vortex, is the world's
largest and tallest indoor waterfall, standing at 40 metres (130 ft) high.
•To prevent excess humidity in the Jewel, the waterfall's flow alternates
between cascades and trickles that reduce air turbulence.
•Its centerpiece is the world's tallest indoor waterfall, 40-metre-high, the
Rain Vortex, and a garden with 2,000 trees in the Forest Valley.
•During the region’s frequent and powerful thunderstorms, recirculated,
natural rainwater will flow at more than 10,000 gallons per minute,
which helps provide cooling and airflow in the landscape environment,
collecting significant rainwater to be re-used in the building.
SHISEIDO FOREST VALLEY
•The Shiseido Forest Valley is a terraced garden attraction that offers
many spatial and interactive experiences for visitors, including walking
trails, cascading waterfalls, and quiet seating areas.
•Surrounding the gardens is a retail marketplace across five levels, which is
accessible to and from the Shiseido Forest Valley through a series of
vertical canyons.
•Two nature trails meander through the gardens, climbing 30 vertical metres
from bottom to top.
• This multi-sensory experience inspires a life of meaningful beauty and
culture.
•Made up of more than 900 trees and palms and about 60,000 shrubs, the
curation of the indoor forest took concerted effort.
•The four-storey incline of the Shiseido Forest Valley also influenced the
types of flora selected. For example, the shrubs chosen are shade-tolerant
and have adapted to space constraints, just as understorey plants have in
real forests. Whether dining at spots overlooking the Shiseido Forest Valley
or strolling through the trails, visitors to Jewel can expect an awe- inspiring
experience when they walk through this climate-controlled space
•This massive installation is that the lights around each tree shine
brightly and then fade to make it look like the trees are breathing.
•Shiseido Forest Valley bathes in natural sunlight and is
surrounded by nature with plants at every turn and a giant
waterfall in the centre.
•SENSE installation combines nature, beauty and art through a
Japanese aesthetic. Relax and take a stroll through the forest and
enjoy the sights, sounds and tranquillity.
•SENSE OF SIGHT
•SENSE OF SOUND
•SENSE OF SMELL
•SENSE OF TOUCH
CANOPY PARK
•On the 5th level is the Canopy Park, which includes 14,000 square meters
of attractions integrated within the garden spaces.
•These include net structures suspended within the trees, a suspended
catenary glass-bottom bridge walk, a planted hedge maze and mirror
maze, and feature installations completed in collaboration with
internationally acclaimed artists.
•There is also a topiary walk and other horticultural displays.
•On the north side of the park is an event plaza space big enough to serve
1,000 people.
•About half of the total landscaping is hosted at Canopy Park, including
two gardens: Topiary Walk and Petal Garden.
•The Topiary Walk features animal-shaped topiaries at every corner, while
the Petal Garden has seasonal floral displays.
•The park includes a suspension bridge called the Canopy Bridge that is
located 23 metres above the ground which offers a panoramic view of the
Rain Vortex.
•At 50 metres long, the Canopy Bridge also has a glass panel flooring at
the centre section that offers a view through to level 1 of Jewel.
