SOIL SAMPLING
Soil sampling is the process of collection of samples of soil in order to determine
the engineering properties of soil required for proper design of foundations
Soil samples are obtained from bore holes after boring and samples are collected
by some suitable sampling techniques
Obtained samples can be either Disturbed or Undisturbed.
Disturbed Sample:- When natural conditions such as its structure, texture, water
content, density or the stress conditions are disturbed then the sample is called
disturbed soil sample.
Undisturbed sample:- Without disturbing the natural conditions such as its
structure, texture, water content, density or the stress condition the sample is
obtained is called undisturbed soil sample.
UNDISTURBED SOIL SAMPLE
Undisturbed samples are those which subjected to minimum disturbances.
Purely undisturbed sample is an ideal condition because all the samples will get
disturbed to some extent.
These samples are used for shear strength and consolidation tests.
Obtaining undisturbed soil samples is quite challenging.
Factors affecting Quality of Undisturbed soil sample are:-
• Side friction
• Volume displacement
• Lateral expansion
• Variation in water content
• Handling and transportation
METHODS OF BORINGS TO GET THE
UNDISTURBED SOIL SAMPLE
Piston sampler
Denison sampler
PISTON SAMPLER
Piston sampler consists of two parts –sampler cylinder and piston cylinder.
Piston first tight in the sampler cylinder
Good quality undisturbed samples of soft and sensitive clay are obtained from
piston samplers which use thin walled sampling tubes with a piston inside.
While the tube is being lowered to the bottom of the drill hole, the piston rods
and piston are held at the bottom.
The thin sampler tube pushed past the piston to obtain sample.
Hence vacuum create top of sample which helps retaining soil sample
The presence of piston prevent rapid squeezing of the soil into the tube and
reduces the disturbance of the sample.
PISTON SAMPLER
OPEN DRIVE SAMPLER (SHELBY TUBE
AND THIN WALL SAMPLER)
The Shelby tubes and thin walled samplers having outside diameter of tube is
40mm to 125mm whose sampler having diameter 50.8mm or 76.2mm are
commonly used. The bottom of the tube acts as a cutting edge.
The sampler tube is attached to drilling rod and lowered to the bottom of the
drilled bore hole and tube is pushed into the soil by rapid motion without impact
or twisting.
After at least 5 minutes the tube is turned 360 degree to shear the sample off at
the bottom before the sample is taken out.
It is used to obtain undisturbed sample of clay and it is also used for exploration
in cohesion less soils below water table.
OPEN DRIVE SAMPLER (SHELBY TUBES
AND THIN WALL SAMPLER)
DENISON SAMPLER
It is a double walled sampler. The outer wall cuts in to the soil and the sample is
obtained inside the inner barrel which is provided with liner.
The sampler is lowered to the bottom of drilled hole and applies downward force
on the sampler.
Fluid under pressure is introduced through inner barrel to cool the coring bit
when outer barrel rotates.
The rotation of outer barrel continues until the required depth reaches.
Denison sampler is mainly used for obtaining samples of stiff to hard cohesive
soils and slightly cohesive sand.
It cannot be used for gravelly soil, loose cohesion less sands and silts below
ground water table and very soft cohesive soils.

CRITERIA FOR UNDISTURBED SAMPLE
Area ratio
Ar = Maximum area of cutting edge/Area of soil sample x 100
The are ratio of undisturbed sample should be less than or equals 10%
