Introduction
India having the land area of 3287263 sq km gives the share of 6,75,583 sq km or 20.5% to beautiful
forests. But this is very much lower than the world average that is 30.4%. Though the forest s are the
gift of nature with its immense values man did not show great interest in protecting the valuable
treasure and nearly 50% of the forests of the world have been already destroyed and got vanished.
The forest is the public property that contributes to human good in various ways. People do not pay
much attention to the greatest social advantages by the forests.

DEFINITION
• Forestation means establishment of a forest naturally or artificially on an
area which was previously for forests or soas to cover the area with tree or
forest. Trees are the world’s largest storehouses of carbon which is
important to maintain global temperatures. The rise in carbon levels is
believed to be the main reason behind global warming. In spite of the
advantages of forests, deforestation has become very rampant in the
modern era causing several problems like pollution, soil erosion, and
climate change. Here are some of the reasons that explain the importance
of forests for all living beings and why they should be preserved
proactively.
2022 F O R E S TAT I O N 5
• BENEFITS OF FORESTS :-

• goods such as timber, food, fuel and bioproducts.

• ecological functions such as carbon storage, nutrient cycling, water and air
purification, and maintenance of wildlife habitat .
• social and cultural benefits such as recreation, traditional resource uses and
spirituality.

What is the Importance of Forests?
Forests are natural habitat to many animals. The trees supply oxygen to the atmosphere.
They affect the rainfall in a particular region. They also provide us wood, medicines,
food, perfumes, paper, clothes etc.

2022 F O R E S TAT I O N 8
Uses of Trees to Absorb Greenhouse Gases

• Forests maintain the ecosystem by absorbing greenhouse gasses like carbon

dioxide that are believed to be the reason for climate change. Carbon is stored
in the biomass within the forests. Tropical forests alone harbor a huge amount
of carbon (around a quarter of a trillion tons) that can be disastrous if it is
released into the atmosphere.

Importance of Trees to Provide a Natural Habitat

• Forests provide a sustainable environment for the survival of millions of

animals. It is home for several species including snakes, turtles, crocodiles,
insects, birds, butterflies, monkeys, and other wild animals. It provides an
ecosystem for the animals to thrive. The forest floor is also a rich medium for
microorganisms, which are essential for the conversion of dead matter into
nutrients. Forests are also home to indigenous people who depend on them for
their livelihood.

DEFORESTATION:-

• Deforestation is defined as the unscrupolous and indiscriminate destruction of

indigenous forests and woodlands/I wood lands.

Causes of deforestation:-
• Over grazing of live stock
• Natural
• Calamities
• HumanActivities
• Over population
2022 F O R E S TAT I O N 11
Effects of deforestation:-
• Deprivation of shelter for birds, insects and food for animals and human beings
• Decreased Oxygen and increased carbon dioxide.
• Scarcity of fuel wood.
• Increase draughts.
• Melting of ice caps causing floods.
• Loss of cultural diversity.
• Increased soil erosion.
• Increased pollution.
• Decreased availability of food products.
• Depletion of soil nutrients
• Global warming.
• Increased aridity.
• Rise in the sea level.
• Global green house effect.
2022 F O R E S TAT I O N 12
• Biological diversity
Prevention of Deforestation:-
• Use of pesticides to reduce damage to forests.
• Control the forest fire created by human activity due to carelessness.
• Use of modern technology.
• Reduce demand though through technological interventions.
• Strengthening the central and state forestry administration and institutions.
• Expansion of forest area can be achieved by implanting trees in forest with people's participation.
• Celebrate Environment day to create awareness among people about how forestation can help in
improving environment

2022 F O R E S TAT I O N 13
Prevention of Deforestation:-
• Use recycled products
• When cutting down trees single out full-grown specimens and spare younger varieties
• use the same portion of land to plant different crops. Use alternate sources of energy
such as cooking gas instead of wood.
• Avoid wastage of forest products.
• Prohibit deforestation .
• Encourage reforestation

2022 F O R E S TAT I O N 14
REFORESTATION AND AFFORESTATION:-
• The sustained yield concept which we have seen already recommends for replantation of trees
whenever any cutting work is carried out in an area .This may use natural or artificial methods.
• This replantation strategy is used even when the forest is destroyed by man made fires or
natural forces. Aerial seeding method is used to forest the rugged terrains.
• Afforestation program should be initiated . New plantation helps in maintaining the eco-balance
. Careful analysis should be made in selecting and planting the trees the suits the geographical
conditions of the chosen areas and also care must be taken to meet the needs of the growth of
the trees.

2022 F O R E S TAT I O N 15
STRATEGIES:-
1) Maintain order in forests and protected areas.
2) Increase revenue returns from authorized activities.
3) Prevent damage to forest resources resulting from unwanted resource violations.
4) Meet sustainable yield targets.
5) Involve the public through information and education programs to prevent violations and damage to forests
and protected areas.
6) Increase skill levels of forest technicians and forest managers in prevention, detection and monitoring
programs.
7) Reduce susceptibility or vulnerabilities that can create opportunities for unwanted activities to occur.

Plan and policies for forestation and prevention of deforestation:-

• Indian forest act, 1927

• Van Mahotsava
National forest policy
Chipko movement
• Van Samrakshan Samiti
National Forestry Actions Programme, 1999

2022 F O R E S TAT I O N 17
National Forestry Actions Programme,1999:-

• Expand the forest area

• Strengthen the policy and institutional network
• Protect existing forest resources
• Improve forest productivity
• Reduce total demand

2022 F O R E S TAT I O N 18
Chipko movement, 1973:-

• Started in hilly areas of Uttar Pradesh

• For prevention of deforestation against relentless process of forest destruction.
• The movement got victory in 1982 and Mrs. Indira Gandhi banned the falling of
trees for 15 years.

2022 F O R E S TAT I O N 19
Van Mahotsava:-

• Since 1950
• Celebrated twice a year in the month of February and July
• Deals with plantation of trees.
Started by Union Ministry of Agriculture and food K.M. Munsi

2022 F O R E S TAT I O N 20
Indian forest act, 1927:-

• Objectives
To conserve and protect the forests
• To ensure judicious use of forest products.
Three forest officers
Duties
Prohibition of clearing of land
Manage forest and protect officers

2022 F O R E S TAT I O N 21
PROTECTION OF FOREST:-
• The forests should be protected from dangerous organisms and their disease
consequences to trees.
• The trees are ruined by parasitic fungi, rusts, mistletoes, viruses and nematodes.
Appropriate chemical sprays and antibiotics must be used to prevent the diseases and
protect the trees.

2022 F O R E S TAT I O N 22
PROPER UTILIZATION OF FOREST PRODUCTS AND FORESTS:-

• The waste material occurs as the result of cutting trees needs to be used effectievely. In
most places the debris is just thrown as useless material, for ex- debris in sawmili .
• Waterproof glues and boards can be made using the debris.
• Foreign exchange of the country is promoted by making forest areas as tourist places.
• Identifying the importance of preserving the forests and realising its economic use
many countries have shown great interest in converting its forest areas into national
parks.

2022 F O R E S TAT I O N 23
Summary
Forests are pivotal in addressing
environmental concerns, ensuring economic
progress, and social development. Together,
these factors underpin the fact we must
conserve our forests in order to maintain a
healthy sustainable environment for future
generations. Simply put, they are our source
of life and we simply cannot afford to lose
them.

2022 F O R E S TAT I O N 24
CONCLUSION:-
Forest conservation support life on
earth.It maintains quality of water
and air, the basic essentials of
existence of life. ... Forests influence
climate and educe extremes of
temperature. They conserve soil and
regulate moisture and stream flow. It
prevents soil erosion and floods.
