shapes!
Kindergarten Math Lesson
Kindergarten SC standards
• Key Concept: Geometry
• The student will:
• K.G.2 Identify and describe a given shape and shapes of objects in
everyday situations to include two-dimensional shapes (i.e., triangle,
square, rectangle, hexagon, and circle) and three-dimensional
shapes (i.e., cone, cube, cylinder, and sphere).
• K.G.3 Classify shapes as two-dimensional/flat or three-
dimensional/solid and explain the reasoning used.
• K.G.4 Analyze and compare two- and three-dimensional shapes of
different sizes and orientations using informal language.
Shapes
• What is a shape?
• A shape is a form that is determined by how its number of
sides.
• Here is an example of some shapes you should already know!
Reminder!
• To remind you all:
• A circle is round with no points
or sides.
• A square has 4 sides that are
the same.
• A triangle has 3 sides.
• A rectangle has 4 sides.
What are two- and three-dimensional
shapes?
• Have you ever heard of a two-dimensional shape?
• A two-dimensional shape is flat which means we
can only draw them on a piece of paper!
• So, what does three-dimensional mean?
• Three-dimensional shape is solid which means that
we can build the shape!
What are some three-dimensional
Shapes?
• Some three-dimensional shapes are a cube and a
rectangular prism!
• A cube has six equal sized faces, and a rectangular
prism has four long faces and two smaller ones!

CUBE RECTANG
Now IT’s YOUR
TURN!
• On your whiteboards,
please draw:
• A square
• A triangle
• A rectangle
• A circle
BUILDING
SHAPES
• We are now going to build three-
dimensional shapes using our
toothpicks and playdough.
• For a cube you will need 8
toothpicks and 8 balls of playdough!
• For a rectangular prism you will
need 12 toothpicks and 10 balls of
playdough!
Let’s Test your
knowledge!
