D. using tobacco
What is nervous
system?
The nervous system is your body’s
decision and communication center.
It is made up of two main divisions-
Central Nervous System and
Peripheral Nervous System.
Together, they control every part of
your daily life, from breathing and
blinking to helping you memorize
facts for a test.
Learning Task 1: WHICH IS WHICH?

Function 1

A. It exchange gases between the external
environment and the blood.

B. It gathers information both from the outside

world and from the inside of the body.
Learning Task 1: WHICH IS WHICH?

Function 2

A. It transmits information to the processing areas
in the brain and spinal cord

B. It produces hormones that regulate the

activities of cells and organisms
Learning Task 1: WHICH IS WHICH?

Function 3

A.It processes information to determine the best
response.

B.It digest and absorbs nutrients from the food

Learning Task 1: WHICH IS WHICH?

Function 4

A.It maintains posture and position of the body

B.It sends information to muscles, glands and

organs so they can respond correctly.

1.Cerebrum
2. Cerebellum
3. Brainstem
B. Spinal Cord
Central Nervous System

-receives and processes all of the

information from all parts of the
body
Central Nervous
System

-it consist of the

BRAIN and
SPINAL CORD
BRAIN

-control center of the nervous

system
BRAIN

3 main parts
-forebrain
-midbrain
-hindbrain
BRAIN

3 main regions
-cerebrum
-cerebellum
-brainstem
CEREBRUM

-large, upper part of the brain that

controls activity and
thought.
CEREBELLUM

-the part under the cerebrum that

controls posture,
balance, and coordination.
BRAIN STEM

-the part that connects the brain to the spinal

cord
and controls automatic functions such as
breathing,
digestion, heart rate, and blood pressure.
B. SPINAL CORD

-about 40-50 cm long

-transmit impulses all over the body to and
from the brain It is also responsible for
involuntary movements
Peripheral Nervous System

-lies outside of Central nervous system

-contains all the NERVES outside the brain
and the spinal cord
-divided into two divisions SOMATIC and
AUTONOMIC
A. Somatic Nervous System

-associated with the voluntary

control of body
movements
A. Autonomic Nervous System

-associated with the involuntary

control of body
movements and has two
subdivisions: SYMPATHETIC and
PARASYMPATHETIC
1.Sympathetic

-known as the fight or flight

response, which controls the
internal functions of the body in
times of stress
1.Sympathetic

-it is responsible for the acceleration

of heart rate and rise of blood
pressure
2.Parasympathetic

-it is known as rest and digest, the

opposite of sympathetic nervous
system
2.Parasympathetic

-it controls the internal functions at

rest
-it slows down the heart rate and
increases the intestinal and gland
activities
