NB-IOT Part-1: Madhan Mohan.P

NB-IoT is a narrowband radio technology standard developed by 3GPP to enable a wide range of cellular devices and services. It requires very small amounts of spectrum to operate while providing good indoor coverage and support for a massive number of low-bandwidth devices connecting to the cellular network. NB-IoT devices can transfer data over the control plane or user plane. Control plane transfer uses the signaling radio bearer, while user plane uses radio bearers like conventional cellular data. NB-IoT operates in lower LTE frequency bands between 698-960 MHz to allow better building penetration for large numbers of low-power devices. It is optimized for intermittent, low-throughput data transmissions from devices with longer battery lives.

About NB-IoT
NB-IoT Requirements
• Minimize the signaling overhead, especially over the radio interface
• Appropriate security to the complete system, including the core network
• Improve battery life
• Support delivery of IP and non-IP data [2, 3]
• Support of SMS as a deployment option [4]
Characteristic of NB-IOT:
• No Handover support in connected state
• No CA support
• Only cell reselection is supported in idle mode with in NB-IOT technology
• No QoS concept, because NB-IoT is not used for delay sensitive data
packets
NB-IOT Core Network
Data in NB-IoT transferred in following ways

Control plane CIoT ( Cellular Internet of Things)

• IP
• NIDD ( Non IP Data Delivery)

User plane CIoT

NB-IOT Core Network cont….
• CP –IP On the Control Plane CIoT EPS optimisation, UL data
are transferred from the eNB(CIoT RAN) to the MME. From
there, data transferred via the Serving Gateway (SGW) to
the Packet Data Network Gateway (PGW),
• CP-NIDD : UL data are transferred from the eNB(CIoT RAN)
to the MME.From there data is ransferred to Service
CapabilityExposure Function (SCEF).
The SCEF is a new node designed especially for machine
type data. It is used for delivery of non-IP data over control
plane and provides an abstract interface for the network
services (authentication and authorization, discovery and
access neworkcapabilities).
In CP no data radio bearer set up, data packets are sent
on the signaling radio bearer instead.

• UP-Data : Data is transferred in the same way as the

conventional data traffic, i.e. over radio bearers via the SGW
and the PGW to the application server.
Frequency Bands
• NB-IOT frequencies are in the lower range of existing LTE bands.
• This reflects that for machine type communications there are a lot of
devices expected in difficult radio conditions
