• Uses of passive voice:


• We use the passive voice mainly in three ways:
• 1. When we don’t want to take responsibility for something
• Ex: The matter will be dealt with soon [We don’t know or what to say wholl deal with it]
• 2. When we want to focus on a happening, not who or what did it
• Ex: Our roof was damaged in last nights storm / The storm damaged our roof last night [We’re concerned
about the roof]
• The documents are destroyed --- no subject
• 3. When we want to avoid vague subjects like one, someone, they etc.
• Ex: The form has to be signed / One, Someone has to sign the form [NOT someone/one has to sign the
form[
• English spoken [NOT one speaks English]
• Shoes repaired [NOT one repairs shoes]

Complete the sentences. Use these verbs in the correct form, present or past:

• The passive of doing/seeing etc. is being done / being seen etc. Compare:
• active: I don’t like people telling me what to do.
• passive: I don’t like being told what to do.
• I remember being taken to the zoo when I was a child.
• (= I remember somebody taking me to the zoo)
• Steve hates being kept waiting. (= he hates people keeping him waiting)
• We climbed over the wall without being seen. (= without anybody seeing us)

• We say ‘I was born …’ (not I am born):
• I was born in Chicago.
• Where were you born? (not Where are you born?) – past tense

• Some verbs can have two objects.
• For example, give: My grandfather gave me this watch.
It is possible to make two passive sentences:
• Ex: I was given this watch (by my grandfather). Or This watch was given to me (by my grandfather).
• Other verbs which can have two objects are:
• ask ,offer, pay, show, tell
When we use these verbs in the passive, most often we begin with the person:
• I’ve been off red the job, but I don’t think I want it. (= somebody has offered me the job)
• You will be given plenty of time to decide. (= we will give you plenty of time)
• I didn’t see the original document, but I was shown a copy. (= somebody showed me a copy)
• Tim has an easy job – he’s paid a lot of money to do very little. (= somebody pays him a lot)

• We use be + a passive participle after will, be going to, can, must, have to, should, etc.
• The gates will be closed this evening.// This rubbish should be thrown away. // The machine has
to be repaired. // The news might be announced soon. // Seats may not be reserved. [modal
verb + not + be + p.p] // How can the problem be solved? [modal verb + sub + be + p.p]
• ACTIVE
• Future: We will bake the bread next. / We are going to bake the bread.
• Modal verb: We should bake the bread soon. / We ought to bake the bread.
• PASSIVE
• The bread will be baked next. / The bread is going to be baked.
• The bread should be baked soon. / The bread ought to be baked.

• Choose the correct verb forms in this news report about a storm.

• Empty subjects (they, people, etc)


• Compare these two sentences.
• ACTIVE: They clean the streets every day.
• PASSIVE: The streets are cleaned every day.
• The new and important information is how often the streets are cleaned. We are not interested
in saying who cleans them. In the active sentence we can use the 'empty subject' they. We
sometimes use a sentence with an empty subject instead of the passive, especially in
conversation.
• We can also use the empty subjects people, you, one and someone.
• ACTIVE: People use this footpath all the time. // You/One should check the details. // Someone
took my purse.
• PASSIVE: This footpath is used all the time. // The details should be checked. //My purse was
taken

• Use a phrase with by only if it adds information.
