Oral Communication in Context

Quarter 1 – Module 5:
Speech Context
OBJECTIVES
After going through this module, you are
expected to:
1. differentiate types of speech contexts;
2. determine appropriate verbal and nonverbal
behavior in given speech contexts; and
3. reflect on your learning on the types of
speech context.
Humans are social beings who have an
earnest need to communicate their
thoughts and feelings. This lesson will
allow you to explore various situations
which you may find yourself in. The
lesson is designed to help you reflect
on your practices when communicating
with others.
SPEECH CONTEXT

These levels of communication are otherwise

known as speech contexts. A speech context is a
situation wherein you express yourself. It also
denotes the setting (environment and
circumstances) in which communication occurs.
There are different types of speech context that
we find ourselves on a day-to-day basis.
INTRAPERSONAL COMM.
Intrapersonal communication happens when we communicate
with ourselves. In this speech context, only one person acts as
both sender and receiver of a message. Sounds weird? You
may not realize it, but it is not uncommon for people to have
internal dialogues whether consciously or subconsciously.
1. Daydreaming
2. Making decisions
3. Writing our thoughts
4. Comforting ourselves
5. Critiquing a speaker or work of art
6. Making body movements while thinking
7. Preparing ourselves before facing an audience
INTERPERSONAL COMM.

Interpersonal communication happens when

you talk with others. This type of
communication establishes personal or
interpersonal relationship between the sender/s
and receiver/s.
Forms of interpersonal communication

• Dyadic communication - involves two people

communicating face-to-face or through a
medium. (conversation, dialogue, interview)
• Small group communication - occurs when
three or more (usually up to 12) people engage
in face-to-face interaction.
• Public communication - is a type of
communication that occurs when a person
delivers a speech in a public setting.
MASS COMMUNICATION

Mass communication is a “one to many” type of

communication wherein speaker/speakers send
their message through a channel to a massive
number of people. Here, feedback is not
immediate, unlike in all other speech contexts.
