Good Morning Class: I Am Teacher Kristine Monderin (Physics Teacher)

Here are explanations of those terms in my own words: Distance - How far an object has traveled. Scalar quantity that does not depend on direction. Displacement - The vector quantity that represents both distance and direction an object has traveled from its starting point. Velocity - The speed and direction an object is moving. A vector quantity that includes both magnitude and direction. Acceleration - The rate of change of an object's velocity. It represents both the change in speed and any change in direction. It is a vector quantity.

Scalar and Vector Quantities

REMINDER

Scalar Quantity– Vector Quantity–

has magnitude but has magnitude and
not direction. direction.

Distance and Displacement and

speed are scalar velocity are
quantities. vector quantities.
SPEED
● Speed (s) – R a t e at which an object is moving.

● s p e e d = d i s t a n ce / t i m e
● s = d/t
● L i ke d i s t a n c e, s p e e d d o e s
not
d e p e n d o n dire ction.
SPEED CALCULATIONS
●Arocket travels 67 km in 4 seconds.
What is the rockets speed?

s=d/t
= 67 000m / 4 s What is
this
= 16 750 m/s answer in km/hr ?
CONVERTING m/s To km/hr
From the previous example.
How we convert 16 570 m/s to km/hr?

16 750 m/s is: or

16750 x 3.6
= km per second = 60
= 16.750 m
km per second 300km/hr
= 16.570 km per second
X 3600 per hour
= 60 300 m/s
CONVERTING m/s To km/hr and
Vice Versa

X 3.6

m/s 3.6
km/hr
3.6
Practice example: Practice example:
Convert 4.5m/s to km/hr Convert 60 km/hr to m/s
4.5 x 3.6 = 16.2 km/hr 60 3.6 = 16.6 m/s
USING THE SPEED
FORMULA TRIANGLE

DISTANCE ( D )
𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐄𝐃 ( 𝐒 )=
TIME (T )

Time(t) =

Distance(d) = Speed(s) x Time(t)

SPEED CALCULATIONS
● A rocket is traveling at 10 km/s. H o w long
does it take the rocket to travel 30 k m ?

t= = = 3 seconds
SPEED CALCULATIONS
●A ra c e c a r is trave ling a t 85. 0 m /s.
H ow far does the car travel in 30.0 s ?

d=s×t

= 85 ms–1 × 30.0 s
Velocity (v) is speed with direction.
Therefore:
For example:
If the big red car is driven west at 5 km hr–1, what is
the velocity of the car?
• 5 km hr–1 west
For example:
If a runner is runs south for 100 m in 11.3 s,
what is her velocity?

Velocity = 8.8 ms–1

A cheetah travels 165m West in 3.5 s, what
is the cheetah’s velocity?

Velocity = 18.5 ms–1 west

Jeff walks to the corner store with a velocity
of 3.5 m/s West, which is 2.5km away.How
long will it take Jeff to reach the corner
store?

3.5 ms–1 west = 2500m west

t
2500m west
t = 3.5 ms–1 west

t = 714.3 s = 11.9 min

LABORATORY

Materials:
• Measured area to perform the
tests(20 m)
• Stopwatch
• 2 Students
Procedure:
• Find the spot that marks 20m from the
starting line.

• One team member will perform each of the

tasks in the table below while the other
student records the amount of time it takes to
complete each task.

• Trade positions with your teammate and

record the second set of data.

• Answer the questions with using the data you

just gathered.

NOTE: Speed walking is walking as fast as

you can without jogging or running.

Questions:
• Which task provided the fastest speed?
• Which task provided the slowest speed?
• How far could you speed walk in 10 minutes?
Use your speed from the 20m test to calculate
the answer.
• How long would it take you to hop 300 meters?
Use your speed from the 20m test to calculate
the answer.
• How far could you walk backwards in one hour?
Use your speed from the 20m test to calculate
the answer.
• How long would it take you to walk not speed
walk 1km? Use your speed from the 20m test to
calculate the answer.
• What was your velocity when you were speed
walking?
Example of Motion Speed (S) or Velocity (V) Give your explanation
(Circle or highlight) “Defend your reasoning”
1.A dog runs on the sidewalk S V
at 9.0 miles per hour
2.While going to school, a S V
