Project Based Learning - Submarine Project-Name: Joshua Amadeus Wilson Class: 1 Ikhlas Subject: Science Subject Teacher: Ms. Debbie

- Joshua Wilson, a student, created a submarine as a science project to demonstrate that an object's ability to float or sink depends on its density, not just its size or weight. - The project involved researching density and water displacement. Key concepts learned were that density is mass divided by volume, and an object floats if its density is less than the liquid's and sinks if greater. - Joshua identified objects that would float or sink and combined them to build a submarine that could float and sink by changing its density. He tested the submarine in a pool or basin to demonstrate the concept.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

• Students often assume that light

object will float while heavy
object will sink in the water. In
fact, the object’s ability to float or
sink is depending on their density.
This proves the ability of a
submarine to float and sink even
thought they are large and build
from heavy metals.

3
FACT FINDING

• All students were needed to

identify the facts regarding
density of materials. All the
information can be search inside
the text book, reference books
and internet.

4
LEARNING CONCEPT TO
KNOW
a) What is density?

• Density is defined as weight per volume. The formula

is Density = Mass/Volume. In the submarine, the volume
stays constant. The density changes by adding or taking
away the different objects.

• When two or more forces act on an object, the result is the

cumulative effect of those forces. The buoyant force is the
net upward force (or uplift) exerted by a fluid on a
submerged object. Gravity counters this force by pulling
down on an object while the buoyant pushes the object up.
If an object’s density is more than that of the liquid, it will
sink (force of gravity is greater than the buoyant force). If an
object’s density is less than that of the liquid, then it will
float (force of gravity is less than the buoyant force). If an
object’s density is the same as that of the liquid, it will
hover (force of gravity is equal to the buoyant force).

5
LEARNING CONCEPT TO
KNOW
b) What is water displacement
method
• Displacement occurs when an
object is immersed in a fluid,
pushing it out of the way and
taking its place. The volume of
the fluid displaced can then be
measured, as in the illustration,
and from this the volume of the
immersed object can be
deduced.

6
ACTION PLAN

a) Identify various objects that can

float or sink in water.
FLOAT SINK

Bottle Cloth pin

Ice cream stick Hard plastic

Polystyrene Rubber band

7
SOLUTION

• Combine all the item to build a

submarine.

• To test the subject in the

swimming pool or basin.
