Relations and Functions

This document defines functions and discusses how to determine if a relation represents a function. It begins by defining a function as a relation where each element in the domain is paired with exactly one element in the range. Several examples of functions and non-functions are given. It also introduces function notation and discusses how the vertical line test can be used to determine if a graph depicts a function. Examples of evaluating functions are provided at the end.

What is a
Function?
2
DEFINITION
Function  A relation in which
each element of the domain ( x
value) is paired with exactly
one element of the range (y
value).
DEFINITION
 A FUNCTION is a relation in which each element in the
domain has only one image in the range.

 Therefore a function can only be a many to one or one to

one mapping.

FUNCTIONS
A function is a relation in which each element of the domain
is paired with exactly one element of the range. Another
way of saying it is that there is one and only one output (y)
with each input (x).

VERTICAL LINE TEST (PENCIL TEST)

If any vertical line passes through more

IS THIS A GRAPH OF A FUNCTION?

Answer Now
Vertical line test.
If you draw a vertical line on the graph of the
relation and the vertical lines crosses 2 different
points then the relation is not a function.
