The Gospels-

4 portraits of Jesus!
Gospels

 Each writer had lots of information available to him

 Stories about Jesus told over and over in community worship
 Words of Jesus, recalled day after day in prayer then applied to life experiences
 Insights were made by preachers about the relationship between the life and
message of Jesus and the history of the Jewish people.
Specific audience
 Each gospel writer was writing with a
different audience in mind
 This is partly because of the specific
period of time the gospel was written
 The geographic area the gospel was
written
 And what was going on in the
community at the time
The Gospel of Mark
Mark

 Possibly written by John Mark, who

learned about Jesus from Peter and
Paul
 Written around 70 CE
 Often recognized as the ‘gospel of
action’ because Jesus is constantly on
the move
 Stresses the humanity and suffering of
Jesus
More Mark!

 Written when Christians were experiencing persecution

under Emperor Nero
 This could be why there is so much suffering in Mark’s
gospel- they needed to bear it as Jesus did
 Portrays Jesus as the unrecognized messiah
 Written for the church in Rome and gentiles
 The Church was experiencing persecution
The Gospel of Luke
Luke

 Possibly written by a gentile

doctor
 Written around 85 CE
 Written for Gentile Christians
and wealthy Christians
 First part of a two part work-
part two being Acts of the
Apostles.
Luke Continued
 Stresses universality of Christian
Message, particularly by showing
young and poor in important roles.
 The Miracle stories stress Jesus’
compassion for those who are
suffering
 The gospel stresses Jesus’ compassion,
mercy and concern for sinners
 Stresses central part of Holy Spirit in
Jesus’ life.
The Gospel of Matthew
Matthew

 Written around 90 CE
 Written for Jews who were
converting to Christianity
 This is why there is such a strong representation of Jewish ideas and customs in
the Gospel of Matthew.
Matthew some more!
 Demonstrates Jesus’ role as a teacher and a
preacher
 Discusses the responsibilities of Jesus’
followers
 Strong emphasis on Jesus as the messiah the
Jewish people have been waiting for
Jesus as the ‘New Moses’
Gospel is organized similar to the
organization of the first five books of the
Old Testament
The Gospel of John
John

 Was written around 95 CE

 Probably written by followers of ‘the beloved disciple’
 Written for the Church at that time, which was
experiencing some persecution
 Reflects advanced theological thought and concentrates
on spirituality realities rather then earthly miracles and
other aspect of Jewish life.
John again!
 Presents Jesus as the word of God and
stresses the incarnation
 Emphasizes faith as coming from God
and as truly present when the believe is
‘without sight’
 Builds poetic and memorable images of
Jesus as the ‘vine’, ‘the good shepherd’.
 Most theologically complex of all the
gospels
