ENVIRONMENTAL
BASELINE
Macro Environment
• The Macroenvironment of the proposed project “AQEELA
HEIGHTS” is located in Nazimabad Block 4 Liaquatabad town,
Karachi. This project is administered by Sindh Building Control
Authority (SBCA) under the jurisdiction of Karachi
Metropolitan Corporation (KMC).

Physical Environment
• The physical environment of the Project has been in this study with
respect the air shed, geology soil characteristics and seismicity.
• The airshed describes climatic conditions and quality of air in the
microenvironment and macro environment and characterize it in
term of level of pollution viz. unpolluted, polluted, grossly
polluted.
• The water shed describes the hydrology and quality of surface and
groundwater as well as water availability. The terrestrial
environment is described by its Geology, geomorphology, soil
characteristics in terms of stability and seismicity.
Climatic Condition
• There is minor seasonal intervention of a mild winter from mid-December to
mid-February and a long moderate to hot and humid summer extending from
April to September. In July and August due to cloud cover, the temperate is
relatively moderate but humid (~70%).
Temperature
• The air temperature in Karachi city district and its coastal areas are generally
moderate throughout the year due to presence of sea.
Precipitation
• The probability that precipitation will be observed at this location varies
throughout the year. Over the entire year, the most common forms of
precipitation are thunderstorms, drizzle, and moderate rain. Thunderstorms
are the most severe precipitation observed during 38% of those days with
precipitation.
• They are most likely around August 12, when it is observed during 12% of
all days. Drizzle is the most common precipitation observed during 34% of
those days with precipitation. It is most likely around July 30, when it is
observed during 14% of all days.
Geology
• Karachi and adjoining areas have plains, hills, rivers, valleys and coasts as diversified physical features.
• Rocks ranging in age from Eocene to recent, deposited under shallow marine to deltaic conditions are exposed.
• Karachi is a part of major synclinorium stretching from Ranpathani River in the east to Cape Monze in the west.
Mehar and Mol mountains lie in the north. Within the synclinorium a number of structures such as Pipri,
Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Pir Mangho and Cape Monze are exposed. The presence of concealed structures under the
Malir River Valley, Gadap and Mauripur plains can fairly be deduced (GSP, 2001).
• Various rock units described above have been folded to form anti-clinal hills and synclinal valleys, with
moderate to gentle dips.

• The fold axes run approximately north-south. Structurally the area may be divided into two zones. First zone is
to the east and northeast and it is characterized by relatively more intense folding and faulting. Rocks ranging in
age from Paleocene to Oligocene are also exposed in this zone.

• The second zone is located in the centre and to the west and southwest and comprises the large area, which
opens out towards the south and largely consists of horizontal or near horizontal strata which form gentle
structural undulations in the form of synclines and anticlines with low dips of 2 to 6 degrees (rarely up to 10
degrees). These folds have a general southward plunge direction.

• These structural features clearly indicate that the structure is more suitable for the accumulation and storage of
ground water by virtue of more extensive recharge zones, locations of probable groundwater aquifers at
shallower depths and several shallow synclinal structures.
Biological and Socio Economic Environment
• The Micro environment of the proposed project area high
rise zone with commercial and residential facilities.
Furthermore the proposed project of residential building is
similar to the existing process.
• The area is already urbanized so the impact on biological
environment is presumed to be very low.
• Hence, the impact on social environment is also not viable.
As far as economic activity is concerned the area is already
adding values to the local market as well as export market
of the Pakistan and bringing revenue for the country.
• So, biological and socio economic section is not included
in this report.

CONCLUSION

• The Initial Environmental Examination study was conducted to evaluate the
environmental and social impact of the proposed “AQEELA HEIGHTS” Project.

• Baseline environmental and socioeconomics information was collected from a variety of

sources, including reports of previous studies, available literature, and field surveys.

• Baseline surveys were conducted on ambient air and noise, flora and fauna, water
resources, and socioeconomic environment of the study region.
• The proposed project activities have been mitigation measures have been
recommended, wherever appropriate, to keep the identified environmental impact
within satisfactory limits.
• Construction and operation activities of the project, including the implementation of al
mitigation measures are carried out as illustrated in this report; the anticipated impact
of the project on the environment of the area will be within suitable limits.

• The IEE concludes that the proposed operation will not lead to significant adverse
environmental impacts.

• Additionally careful implementation of the EMP will ensure that environmental impacts
are managed and minimized and the project proponent meets all statutory
requirements.
