Geothermal Powerplant Presentation: Reynaldo L. Lorida Jr. Maam Panganiban IX - Apitong

The document discusses geothermal powerplants. It begins by defining geothermal energy as heat stored underground, derived from the earth's formation and radioactive decay. There are three main types of geothermal power generation: dry steam, flash, and binary cycle. It then outlines the five step process for how geothermal powerplants work, involving pumping hot water from underground, dropping pressure to create steam to spin turbines, condensing the steam back to water, and re-injecting it underground. The presentation discusses encouraging a barangay to understand geothermal's benefits, and lists the advantages as being renewable, environmentally friendly, and providing stable energy. The disadvantages include being location-

Geothermal Powerplant

Presentation
Reynaldo L. Lorida Jr. Maam Panganiban
IX – Apitong
What is a Geothermal Powerplant?
• Geothermal energy is a type of energy derived from heat, which is
stored and formed underground. Heat energy is what sets the
temperature of an object. The geothermal energy of the earth's crust
comes from the original formation of the planet, and from the
radioactive boiling of matter.
• are used in order to generate electricity by the use
of geothermal energy (the Earth's internal thermal energy)
What are the 3 ways of Geothermal
Powerplant?
 There are 3 ways of doing the Geothermal Poweplant
1. Dry steam - the oldest geothermal technology, takes steam out of fractures in the
ground and uses it to directly drive a turbine.
2. Flash - plants pull deep, high-pressure hot water into cooler, low-pressure water.
3. Binary -  cycle power plant is a type of geothermal power plant that allows
cooler geothermal reservoirs to be used than is necessary for dry steam and flash
steam plants.
How thus Geothermal Powerplant works?
 5 steps to do in Geothermal Powerplant. These are:
1. Hot water is pumped from deep underground through a well under high pressure.
2. When the water reaches the surface, the pressure is dropped, which causes the water to
turn into steam.
3. The steam spins a turbine, which is connected to a generator that produces electricity.
4. The steam cools off in a cooling tower and condenses back to water.
5. The cooled water is pumped back into the Earth to begin the process again.
How can we encourage our barangay to know the benefits of
Geothermal Powerplant?

1. Weneed to explain to them the advantages and disadvantages of Geothermal

Powerplant.

2. We could get a huge advantage of doing the Geothermal Poweplant.

3. Letthem make the right decisions to join or participate in the event of the
barangay

4. Gather for meeting to know the benefits of Geothermal Powerplant.

What are the Advantages of Geothermal Energy?
 There are 5 Advantages of Geothermal Powerplant. These are:
1. Environmentally Friendly - more environmentally friendly than conventional fuel sources such
as coal and other fossil fuels.
2. Renewable - is a source of renewable energy that will last until the Earth is destroyed by the sun
in around 5 billion years.
3. Huge Potential - Worldwide energy consumption is currently around 15 terawatts, which is far
from the total potential energy available from geothermal sources.
4. Sustainable / Stable - Geothermal provides a reliable source of energy as compared to other
renewable resources such as wind and solar power.
5. Heating and Cooling - Effective use of geothermal for electricity generation requires water
temperatures of over 150°C to drive turbines.
What are the Disadvantages of Geothermal
Energy?
 There are 5 as well Disadvantages of Geothermal Energy. These are:
1. Location Restricted - The largest single disadvantage of geothermal energy is that it
is location specific. Geothermal plants need to be built in places where the energy is
accessible, which means that some areas are not able to exploit this resource
2. Environmental side effects - Although geothermal energy does not typically release
greenhouse gases, there are many of these gases stored under the Earth’s surface which
are released into the atmosphere during digging.
3. Earthquake - Geothermal energy also runs the risk of triggering earthquakes. This is
due to alterations in the Earth’s structure as a result of digging.
4. High Costs - Geothermal energy is an expensive resource to tap into, with price tags
ranging from around $2 - $7 million for a plant with a 1 megawatt capacity.
5. Sustainability - In order to maintain the sustainability of geothermal energy fluid needs
to be pumped back into the underground reservoirs faster than it is depleted.
That’s it for my presentation! I’ve gathered information through
google as well in the pictures sent in the group chat. Thank you
for the time to read! Thanks.
