Investigations On End Milling of CFRP Composite Using Router Tools

The document presents a project work on end milling of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composite using router tools. It discusses the problem statement of difficult machining due to fiber orientation and tool wear. The objectives are to investigate the effect of cutting parameters and coated vs uncoated tools. A literature review covers how fiber orientation and cutting parameters influence surface quality and tool wear. The methodology outlines the experimental plan to measure surface roughness under different conditions.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

• The fiber orientation in CFRP laminates makes machining difficult resulting

in major defects like delamination and poor surface finish.

• Abrasive wear occurs on the cutting tool during CFRP machining leads to
shortening of tool life, thereby damaging surface quality of CFRP laminates.

OBJECTIVES
• To investigate the effect of cutting parameters and to optimize the cutting
parameters to achieve the desired surface quality.

• To investigate the effect of DLC coated router tool when compared to

uncoated router tool.

LITERATURE SURVEY
CFRP- Fibre Orientation
 M.H. El-Hofy et al., 2011
 Wavy surfaces were observed at 45 oriented plies.
 90 and 135 oriented plies suffered matrix cracking.
 The best surface was found on plies where the fibres were parallel to
the tool feed/cutting direction (0).

LITERATURE SURVEY

 Oliver Pecat et al., 2012

 At 0 and 45 fibre orientation, smooth surface was found.
 Milling the CFRP at 80°C led to the best results, which is close to the
glass transition temperature of its epoxy resin.

LITERATURE SURVEY

 Dinh Nguyen et al., 2018

 45 plies resulted in the most extensive flank wear while 90 orientation
yields the worst edge radius rounding and largest worn tool area.
 0 ply angle has the least tool wear for all measurement types due to the
minimal interactions between carbon fibers and cutting edge.

LITERATURE SURVEY

Influence of cutting parameter

 Dervis Ozkan et al., 2019
 Tool wear results related with the change in feed rate indicate that the
lowest wear was observed at 0.25 mm/tooth feed rate.
 The lowest wear was observed with 300 mm/min cutting speed.

LITERATURE SURVEY

 Maojun Li et al., 2018

 A variable feed rate strategy was investigated where drill feed was
decreased from a maximum of 0.3 mm/rev to 0.01 mm/rev for the final 2
mm of hole depth.
 Drilling with the variable feed rate strategy resulted in improved hole
surface quality at the exit section in terms of reduced fiber pull out and
damage/voids compared to the entrance position.
