What is Computer?

 Electronic device for receiving and processing

input, storing commands and results, and

providing output. (Blissmer, 1985)

 Consists of hardware and software


A. Hardware
1. CPU (Central Processing Unit): to process data, consists of Processor,
VGA Card, Soundcard, ROM, RAM, Motherboard, Casing
2. Power supply: to provide and stabilize power
3. Monitor: to display data being accessed
4. Keyboard: to input characters (letters, numbers), perform action
5. Mouse: to point things, put placeholder, do and execute task
6. Printer: to produce printed output data
7. CD/DVD ROM: to access data stored in CD/DVD
8. Hard disk: to store data
9. Scanner: to change input data to digital format
10. Speaker: to enable sound from computer to be heard
11. Headphone: additional hardware to listen to sound from computer
12. USB port: to connect computer to USB flash disk or cable
B. Software
Office applications:
1. Microsoft Word: to process
documents like letters, reports,
summaries, etc dealing with more
sentences and paragraphs
2. Microsoft Excel: to process data in
form of spreadsheet dealing with
numbers and formulas to make the
work easier and faster
3. Microsoft PowerPoint: to create
slides of presentation

B. Software

 Web Browser: software application that


allows user to locate, access and display
information in web pages on the internet.
 Example of web browser: Microsoft Internet
Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox,
Opera Browser and Apple Safari.
C. Procedures in operating
computer
1. Turn on power supply
2. Turn on CPU
3. Turn on monitor and wait until the loading process is done
4. Select application that you will use (MS Office)
5. Write a business letter according to the instruction
6. After you have finished your work, save your work and
close all application
7. Shut down computer
8. Turn off monitor
9. Turn off power supply
D. Sending letter via
internet
 We need an internet connection and an email
account to successfully send letter through
internet.
 You also need an email address of the person
or institution you need to reach out.
 It could be from free mailing provider. For
example: mail.google.com, or an official email
from institution ([email protected])
Steps to send letter using
email
1. Make sure you are connected
to a safe and secured internet
network. It could be from LAN,
Wi-Fi, modem, hotspot, etc.
2. Open web browser (Google
Chrome)
3. Go to mail.google.com
4. Write your email account or phone
number
5. Type your password and sign in
to your account
6. Click “Compose” to start
writing your email
7. Write email address of the
recipient in “To” section
8. Write the subject and content of
your email. After you check them all,
click Send.
9. There will be a notification
if your message is already sent.
10. Check “Sent” folder to make sure
your email has been successfully sent
