Lesson 5 Inverse Function

1. The document discusses inverse functions, including determining the inverse of a one-to-one function, representing an inverse function through tables of values and graphs, and finding the domain and range of an inverse function. 2. It provides examples of determining the inverse operation of various functions, such as adding 8 and subtracting 8 being inverse operations. 3. The properties of a function f and its inverse function are discussed, including that the domain of f is the range of the inverse function and vice versa.

REVIEW!!!
FUNCTIONS
A Function is a relation where each element in the
domain is related to only one value in the range by
some rule.

ONE TO ONE FUNCTION

A function is a one to one if no more than

one element in the domain is paired with one
element in range. Or it is a set of input and
output values with input value having only
one output value. Example. Input : family
member, Output: social security system ( as
each person has a unique number).
Determine the following if it is a one to one
function;
1.Input is math teacher and output is
students in the class.
2.Input is Zip code and output is residents of
the town.
3.Input is student and output is zip code.
4.Input is Facebook Account and output is
students in the class.

INVERSE FUNCTION
The original function is one to one since no two y
values share the same x value.
Lets invert the values of x and y:

The inverse function is still a function since each x

values is associated to only one y value
The original function is not a function since one
of its y values is paired to more than 1 x values.

The inverse is also not a function since one of

the x values is paired to more than 1 y values.

Group Activity B:
Direction:
1. Make a table of values for y = 3x + 5 and name
it “Original”.
2. Make another table of values and interchange
the values of x and y. Name the table into “Inverse”

relationship of two graph. Compare the two graphs
individually and look for any
relationships/differences between the two.

reflection of the original
function across the line y = x ”.
Every point on the graph of the

GRAPHS OF INVERSE FUNCTION

The graph of the inverse is the reflection of the graph of the

original function. The axis of symmetry is the line y = x.

REFLECTIVE PROPERTY OF THE GRAPHS OF f and

The graph of the inverse of f can be found from the graph
of f by locating the mirror image of each point of f with
respect to y = x. We say that the graphs of f and its inverse
have symmetry about the line whose equation is y = x.
