Work Order Management: Schneider Electric DMS NS

The document discusses work order management in an electric utility. It describes the process of creating a work request to isolate a feeder section for replacement, including preparing the request, determining necessary isolation points, and validating switching actions. It then covers approving the work request and scheduling the work. Finally, it discusses executing the approved work plan, which may involve remote switching or coordinating with field crews. The overall process provides utilities a tool to plan and manage both planned and emergency activities on the distribution network.

WORK ORDER MANAGEMENT
OVERVIEW
● Work order management application is a part of the ADMS solution

● It provides the utility with the tool for management of the planned and
unplanned activities in the network

● Usually, these activities imply isolation of the specific network parts in order
to prepare them for various types of maintenance or construction work in
that area

● Work Order Management includes the process of submitting work requests

for the review and approval by the control center, operating entities, and
resource planners

Schneider Electric DMS 4

WORK ORDER MANAGEMENT
OVERVIEW
● On the example of one medium-size distribution network scheme, the whole
process of creation, preparation and execution of a work order will be shown

● In the presented example, the work order will contain the actions for
isolation of one feeder section for the purposes of the section isolation
replacement

The section that will be selected for the isolation

PREPARATION OF THE WORK REQUEST

Schneider Electric DMS 6

PREPARATION OF THE WORK REQUEST

● The first step of the process of planning an activity in the network is to fill the
formal work request
what is requested,
by whom,
when and why?
● One work request contains all relevant information (project configurable)
in the given example, the replacement
about the planned activity: the data about the responsible party in the
of the highlighted section’s isolation will be done
header and the equipment that will be necessary for the operation in the
body
the equipment that should be
isolated for the requested work

PREPARATION OF THE WORK REQUEST

● The next step is to determine the necessary isolation points that will enable
the requested activity to be done properly
Section that will be isolated

● The user can specify the necessary isolation points or let the system
determine them based on the requested equipment for the isolation

Preparation of the work request

PREPARATION OF THE WORK REQUEST

● The necessary steps for the preparation of the work request are now done,
and the created work request is visible in the Work Request Browser

● Since no actions have been taken yet, the state of the new work request is
set to ‘draft’

Schneider Electric DMS 9

PREPARATION OF THE SWITCHING ACTIONS

Schneider Electric DMS 10

PREPARATION OF THE SWITCHING ACTIONS

● Once the work request is prepared, the distribution utility has to determine
the switching plan for the isolation of the section that will be operated

● The operators can specify the switching steps on their own or with the help
of the system

Steps determined by
the system

Schneider Electric DMS 11

PREPARATION OF THE SWITCHING ACTIONS

● In ADMS software, prior to any change of dynamical state of the device or

submitting the switching actions, all requested changes are simulated and
the simulation results are presented to the user

Violation results are colored according

to the●result
In this(message) severityviolations
way all potential (configurable)
are detected on time, and user is warned
about the possible consequences of the requested action(s)

The validation has detected a

possible violation (error)!!
● This process is called Validation and it is a necessary step prior to
submitting the created switching plan

Validation of the switching actions determined by the system

Schneider Electric DMS 12
PREPARATION OF THE SWITCHING ACTIONS

● System determines the steps for isolation using the “Element Isolation”
function, however safety rules for the planned work in the network can have
some special safety requirements (project configurable)

The Work Requested status after
it has been approved
● After the switching plan is created and approved, the work request creation
is completed

● According to the utility regulations, the actions for submitting and approving
of the particular steps in the entire process of the work order management is
configurable

● After the work request has been approved the whole process of the
preparation for the work in the field has been done

THE EXECUTION OF THE WORK PLAN

Schneider Electric DMS 15

THE EXECUTION OF THE WORK PLAN

● Work plans are usually scheduled a few weeks in advance

The example shown in this presentation

● In this section, the example of the actions following the actual execution of
the work plan (when the scheduled moment has come) will be presented

The overview of all scheduled operations in a specific time period is provided

for the user in the Work Management Gant Chart
● Also, the possibility to schedule emergency work plans is provided, however
the following procedure is very similar (the time before execution and the
process of approval in the utility is the only difference)

Schneider Electric DMS 16

THE EXECUTION OF THE WORK PLAN

● The execution process is led by the operator in charge in the control center

● The operator can execute switching actions directly in the control center if
the remote control of the corresponding equipment is provided

● If, however, no remote control exists or it does only on some of the selected
devices (which usually is the case), the operator leads the process from the
control room with the help of the field crew

● The latter case will be shown

Schneider Electric DMS 17

THE EXECUTION OF THE WORK PLAN

● The first step is to assign the crew which will execute the operations in the
field

The properties
(informational data) of each
crew are provided

The operator is provided with the

list of all crews

Assigning the crew to the work plan

Schneider Electric DMS 18
THE EXECUTION OF THE WORK PLAN

● Once the assigned crew arrives to the requested position in the network the
work plan execution can start

● The field crew and the operator in the control center can communicate via
telephones, radios or field clients, if provided

● In the presented example, the communication via field clients will be shown

Schneider Electric DMS 19

THE EXECUTION OF THE WORK PLAN

● The field crew and the operator in the control center communicate via
some sort of the field client (lap-top, smartphone, tablet)

Work plan from this example

● Each crew must login into their field client with their unique credentials
(safety measures are configurable)

● On the field client the crew has an overview of the tasks they are
assigned to
