Discussion
IN TODAYS LESSON WERE GOING TO DISCUSS THE PROSE AND POETRY.
Merriam Webster defines literature as writings in prose or verse especially: writings having
excellence of form or expression and expressing ideas of permanent or universal interest.
Literature is a term used to describe written and sometimes spoken material. Derived from the
Latin word literature meaning “writing formed with letters”, literature most commonly refers to
works of the creative imagination, including poetry, drama, fiction, nonfiction, and in some
instances, journalism, and song.
Literature can generally be divided into two types; prose and poetry.
Prose consists of those written within the common flow of conversation in sentences and
paragraphs, while poetry refers to those expressions in verse, with measure and rhyme, line and
stanza and has a more melodious tone.
1. Prose
It is made up of sentences and paragraphs, written without any metrical
(or rhyming) structure. It applies a natural flow of speech and ordinary
grammatical structure.
WE HAVE 2 Kinds of Prose:
Fiction: IT IS ANY CREATIVE WORK IN IMAGINARY WAYS, WHICH MEANS IT IS NOT STRICTLY BASED
ON HISTORY OF FACTS
a. Novel- It is a long narrative divided into chapters. The events are taken from true-to-life stories…
and span a long period of time. There are many characters involved.

Example: Noli Me Tangere (Latin for “Don’t Touch Me”) is a novel written by Jose Rizal.
b. Short Story- It is a narrative involving one or more characters, one plot and one single impression.

Example: Scent of Apples by Bienvenido Santos.

c. Plays- These are presented on a stage, divided into acts and each act has many scenes.
Example: ADARNA adapted by Vladimir Gonzales for Dulaang UP’s 38th Season.
d. Legends- These are fictitious narrative, usually about origins.

Example: The Legend of Mayon Volcano

e. Fables- These are also fictitious and they deal with animals and inanimate things who speak and
act like people and their purpose is to enlighten the minds of children to events that can mold their
ways and attitudes.
Example: The Monkey and the Turtle
Non-fiction: IT IS ANY DOCUMENT OR MEDIA
CONTENT THAT INTENDS TO PRESENT
ONLY TRUTH AND ACCURACY REGARDING
INFORMATION

a. Essay- This expresses the viewpoint or opinion of the writer about

a particular problem or event. The best example of this is the Editorial page of a Newspaper.
b. Biography- This deals with the life of a person which may be about himself, his autobiography
or that of others.
Example: The First Filipino: The Award-Winning Biography of Jose Rizal by Leon Ma. Guerrero
c. Autobiography- It gives the history of a person’s life, written or told by that person. It is often
written in narrative form of their person’s life.
Poetry
- It is a literary work in which special intensity is given to the expression of feelings and ideas by
the use of distinctive style and rhythm.
- It is a writing that formulates a concentrated imaginative awareness of experience in language
chosen and arranged to create a specific emotional response through meaning, sound, and
rhythm.
Types of Poetry:
A. Narrative Poetry- a poem that tells a story.

1. Epic- This a long narrative poem of the largest proportions. Epic is a tale mainly about a hero concerning the beginning, continuance, and the end of
events of great significance on tribal or national significance.
Example: The Epic of Gilgamesh, Iliad, and Odyssey
2. Metrical Tale- This is a narrative poem consisting usually a single series connective events that are simple, and generally do not form a plot. Examples
of these are simple idylls or home tales, love tales, tales of the supernatural or tales written for a strong moral purpose in verse form.

Example: The Lady of the lake by Sir Walter Scott’s

3. Ballad- The simplest type of narrative poetry. It is a short narrative poem telling a single incident in simple meter and stanzas. It is meant to be sung.
Example: The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge
B. Lyric Poetry- This is a poem that is very personal in nature. It expresses the
author’s own thoughts, feelings, moods and reflections in musical language. It
derived it’s name from the musical instrument, the lyre.

1. Ode- This a lyric poem of some length, serious in subject and dignified in style.
It is most majestic of the lyric poems. It is written in a spirit of praise of some persons or things.
Example: Ode on Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood by William Wordsworth.
2. Elegy- This is a poem written on the death of a friend of the poet. The ostensible purpose is to praise the friend. But in the end of the poem, however,
we can expect that poet will have come to terms with his grief.

3. Song- This is a lyric poem in a regular metrical pattern set to music. It has twelve syllables and slowly sung to the accompaniment of a guitar or banduria.

4. Sonnet- This is a lyric poem containing of four iambic pentameter lines, and a complicated rhyme.

The Tale of the Woodcutter and the Tiger
Korean folklore recalls the tale of a woodcutter who encounters a tiger in the woods. Fearing that he would soon be the tiger’s
dinner, he exclaimed:
“You must be my long lost brother! Our mother cried for you when you left home. She had dinner ready for you every night, waiting
for your return. Sadly, our mother has just passed away. How happy she would have been had she known you are alive and well!”
The woodcutter took out his handkerchief and pretended to wipe at his eyes. The tiger turned away, as tears fell down his cheeks,
leaving the woodcutter unharmed.
Every year thereafter, on Chesa, the memorial day of the
woodcutter’s mother’s death, an offering appeared on her grave – sometimes a peasant, or even his mother’s favorite mountain
berries. The woodcutter did not know where these offerings came from.
One year, the woodcutter noticed that the customary offering had not been placed on his mother’s grave, and he wondered what
had happened. Out from the bush, three baby tigers appeared, carrying offerings. They approached the wood- cutter and cried: “You
must be our uncle! Mother tiger is gone now, and we know how important it is for her to honor grand- mother by bringing an
offering to her Chesa table beside her grave. We are here to bring offerings for our grandmother in loving memory of our mother.”
The woodcutter noticed that his face had turned suddenly warm and realized that it was his own tears streaming down his cheeks.
Answer the comprehension questions:
1. Who are the characters in the story? What are the characteristics
of these characters that you admire/ don’t admire?

Generalization:
In literature, the basic purpose of prose in writing is to convey an idea, deliver information or tell
a story. Prose is the way the writer fulfills her basic promise to a reader to deliver story with
characters, setting, conflict, a plot and a final payoff.

Poetry is so important because it helps us understand and appreciate the world around us.
Poetry’s strength lies in its ability to shed “sideways” light on the world, so the truth sneaks up
on you. Poetry teaches us how to live.
