Introduction To Energy Conversion and Utilization

The document discusses steam turbines as an energy conversion technology. It notes that steam turbines are versatile and can be used in both standalone systems and combined cycle plants to improve efficiency. The document recommends steam turbines for further academic research due to their ability to be coupled with different conversion technologies, especially renewable energies like solar, geothermal, and bioenergy. Steam turbines are identified as a mature technology that has been tested for decades and can help accelerate sustainable energy development.

INTRODUCTION TO ENERGY

CONVERSION AND
UTILIZATION
ME-218 OL
1. WHAT ENERGY CONVERSION TECHNOLOGY DID YOU FIND THE MOST
HELPFUL IN ACCELERATING SUSTAINABLE ENERGY DEVELOPMENT?

• The Steam turbine, the steam turbine is one of the mid-early

devices that are up until today widely used in different applications.
• Steam turbine is applied in several steam based applications,
including renewable energies such as geothermal energy.
2. WHAT SURPRISED YOU THE MOST ABOUT YOUR PREFERRED
TOPIC?

• The versatility of the steam turbine, that it can be used not only on
several systems as a stand-alone energy converter but it can also be
used for combine cycle plants to improve efficiency.
3. WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS CONVERSION TECHNOLOGY TO
THE ACADEME FOR FURTHER RESEARCH?

• Definitely, with the versatility of the steam turbine to be coupled with

different conversion technology specifically the renewable energy.
4. WHY WOULD THIS RESOURCE BE YOUR BEST CHOICE?

• Because, the steam turbine is a mature technological component that

covers a wide range of applications as stated by Enrico Sciubba, in
Encyclopedia of Energy, 2004. it can be paired with several renewable
energy resources such as solar, geothermal, bio-energy and ocean
energy. Aside from the current use on non-renewable energy that are
nuclear and fossil fuel. It is a main component that converts thermal
energy from steam into a useable mechanical energy. It is well known
and have been tested for decades.
5. DISCUSS BRIEFLY THE FINANCIAL CHALLENGES OF THE CHOSEN
ENERGY CONVERSION SYSTEM.

• Because the Steam turbines need a thermal energy source, the setup of
the technology needs a complete cycle. This includes the steam boiler
or a superheated substance source. With this fact, the upfront costs of
building a steam/heat based powerplant will add up aside from the
main conversion that is being done be it solar, geothermal or other
renewable heat sources.
6. LIST/STATE THE IMPORTANT FACTS FROM YOUR DESKTOP
RESEARCH.

• There are several existing energy conversion methods, one of the most
efficient methods where steam turbine is being applied is nuclear but
with a trade off of high radioactive wastes from the process.
• Steam turbines have several applications including stand alone energy
conversion and a supplementary waste heat converter.
• Steam turbines are utilized in several renewable energy conversion
powerplants. Most of the powerplants it is used are Geothermal and
Bio-Energy.
