Solving Quadratic Equation Graphically

The graph of a quadratic function is called a parabola. The parabola y=x^2 opens upwards, with the vertex at (0,0) and the axis of symmetry at x=0. More generally, the parabola defined by y=(x-h)^2+k has its vertex at (h,k) and opens upwards if a>0 or downwards if a<0. The axis of symmetry is determined by setting y=0 and solving for x.

Looking at this table, in contrast with the points defined by a linear function, we observe
that the points in table are no longer collinear. This means that the points are connected
by a smooth curve. Moreover, the farther the value of x from 0 is ( that is, as x gets
larger or smaller than 0), the larger the value of y would be. The following graph
illustrates the curve by y = x².

The graph of a quadratic function is called a parabola.
In the parabola y = x², the point (0,0) is the “ lowest point “ of the curve, and it is
called the vertex of the parabola. Moreover, when the coordinate plane is folded
along the line x = 0 ( or the y-axis ), the left portion and the right portion of the
parabola “ coincide. “ We say that the parabola y = x² is symmetric with respect to
the line x = 0, and the line x = 0 is the axis of symmetry of the parabola. Finally,
the parabola y = x² intersects the x – axis and the y- axis at the same point (0,0),
and the point (0,0) is the x – intercept and y- intercept of the parabola.
The parabola defined by y = (x-h)² + k
the parabola opens upward when a > 0, and it opens downward when a<0.
The vertex of the parabola is the point ( h, k). It is the lowest point of the
parabola if a > 0. and it is the highest point if a < 0.
The axis of symmetry of the parabola is (are) determined by setting y = 0,
and then solving for x. On the other hand, the y – intercept is determined by
setting x = 0, and then solving for y.

c. Find the solution of the equation.
If you expand and simplify the vertex form you will get the general form.

F(x) = a( x-h )² + k
= a(x² - 2hx + h²) + k
= ax² - 2ahx + ah² + k
f(x) =ax² -(2ah)x + (ah² + k) This is the general form of the function where b = -2ah of the
function where b = -2ah and c = ah² + k

when you solve for h, then you will get h = -b/ 2a , this is the x – coordinate of the vertex.
On the other hand.

c = ah² + k
k = c - ah²
k = c – a ( )²
k = c – a( )
k=c–( )
k=
(h, k) = ( - , - )
If a is positive, the parabola opens upward, if a negative , the parabola is opens downward.

If IaI is greater than 1, the parabola is narrower than f(x) = x².

If IaI is between 0 and 1, the parabola is flatter than f(x) = x².

The graph of y = a(x-h)² has the same shape as the graph of y = ax².

If h is positive, the graph of y = ax² is shifted h units to the right.

If h is negative, the graph of y = ax² is shifted h units to the left.

The vertex is ( h , 0) and the axis of symmetry is x = h.

Quadratic functions from general form to vertex form.

1. y = x² - 6x + 4

2. y = - 2x² + 10 x - 7

3. y = 2x² - 12x + 4
Transform a quadratic function from the vertex form,

1. f(x) = 3(x-3)² + 7

2. f(x) = -2(x+1)² + 1

3. f(x) = (x+8)² -7
