Language of Mathematics: Mathematics in The Modern World

The document provides information about mathematical language and symbols. It discusses: - Common symbols used in mathematics like digits, Greek letters, logical symbols, and symbols for operations. - Differences between English and mathematical language, such as different meanings of words and uses of numbers. - Translating English statements to mathematical expressions by identifying key words and applying the correct operations, order of operations, and variables. - Examples of translating English phrases like "twice a number" to the mathematical expression "2n".

Topic 4: The Language of Sets

Any group or collection of objects is called a SET. The objects

that belong in a set are the elements, or members of the set.
A set is a collection of well-defined objects. Set is
conventionally represented by capital letters such as 𝐴, 𝐵, 𝐶, …
etc. These objects are called elements. Set is denoted with
braces or curly brackets { }.

Note: Each element in a set should be separated by comma.

Topic 4: The Language of Sets

1. A set of counting numbers

from 1 to 5.
2. A set of English letters from
a to d.
3. A set of all even positive
integers.
4. A set of an integers.

5. Set of natural numbers

Note: Ellipsis is denoted as … which is used to show that an

established pattern continues.
Topic 4: The Language of Sets

Each member of the set is called an element and the “∈”

notation means that an item belongs to a set while ∉ notation
means that an item does not belong to a set.

Is 6 an element 6 is not an element of

of A? set A.

TERMINOLOGIES OF SETS
Unit Set
- a set that contains only one
element
Empty Set / Null
Set
- a set that has no element

Finite Set
- a set that the elements in a given set
is countable
Infinite Set
- a set that elements in a given set has no end or
not countable

Topic 4: The Language of Sets
TERMINOLOGIES OF SETS
Equivalent Set
Two sets, say A and B, are said to be equivalent if and only if they have the
exact number of elements, denoted by 𝐴 ≡ 𝐵. There is a 1 to 1
correspondence.

Equal Set
Two sets, say A and B, are said to be equal if and only if they have equal
number of cardinality and the element/s are identical, denoted by 𝐴 = 𝐵.
There is a 1 to 1 correspondence.

Topic 4: The Language of Sets
TERMINOLOGIES OF SETS
Joint Sets
Two sets, say A and B, are said to be joint sets if and only if they have
common element/s.

Disjoint Sets
Two sets, say A and B, are said to be disjoint if and only if they are mutually
exclusive or if they don’t have common element.
