Rational Numbers

This document discusses rational numbers including objectives, converting between fractions and decimals, operations on rational numbers, and word problems involving rational numbers. The key points covered are: - Expressing rational numbers as fractions and decimals and converting between the two representations. - Performing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division on rational numbers in both fraction and decimal form by following specific rules. - Solving word problems that require applying rational number operations and conversions between fractions and decimals.

RATIONAL

NUMBERS
Objectives

1. Express rational numbers from

fraction forms to decimal forms and
vice versa.
2. Perform operations on rational
numbers.
3. Solve problems involving rational
numbers.
Learning Task 1

Remember:

To change fraction to decimals

-divide the numerator by the denominator.

To change decimals to  fraction

  - divide the decimal by power of 10.
Translate the given statements into fractions
and decimals.
Given Fraction Decimal

1. two-tenths

2. Three-tenths
3. One hundred twenty-
five thousandths

4. one-fourth

5. seven-hundredths   0.07

❖Every rational number can be represented by
either a terminating decimal or repeating,
nonterminating decimal.

❖ The fractions when changed to decimals give

a finite number of digits or the remainder is 0
are called terminating decimals.

❖ The fractions when changed to decimal
forms consist of digits which repeat
indefinitely or continue to repeat without
end are called repeating, nonterminating
decimals.

Converting

Fraction
Changing Decimal to Fraction

A decimal is changed to a fraction by

using its digits (without the decimal
point) as a numerator and selecting an
appropriate power of 10 as the
denominator. The fraction can be
changed to lowest term when possible.

2. Express 0.8 in fraction.
Place the repeating number in the numerator

In the denominator, use the same number of

9’s as the number of repetends

3. Express 0.15 in fraction.

4. Express 0.27 in fraction.
Multiply the given decimal by the
(0.27 )(10)   power of 10 based on the place
value of nonrepetend.
Multiply the given decimal by
(0.27 )(100)
power of 10 based on the place
value of repetend.

Rules in adding/subtracting fractions
❖To add/subtract similar fractions, add/subtract their
numerators and retain their common denominator.
Reduce the sum/difference to its simplest form.

❖To add/subtract dissimilar fractions, make them similar

first.
❖Find the LCD. The LCD is the LCM of the denominator.
❖Divide the LCD by each denominator then multiply the
quotient by the numerator and retain the denominator.
❖Proceed as in addition of similar fractions.
