Clothing and Textiles

This document provides information about textile terminology including fibers, yarn, fabrics, and their properties. It defines fibers as materials made from natural or synthetic sources that can be spun into yarn or made directly into fabric. Yarn is described as a long continuous length of interlocked fibers that can be used to make textiles through processes like weaving, knitting, and embroidery. The document also briefly outlines different types of yarn constructions and fabric formation methods like weaving and knitting.

Textile Terminology
Fibres- Textile fibre is a material mainly made from natural or synthetic sources. Textile
fibres are those which have properties that allow them to be spun into yarn or directly made into
fabric.
Yarn-In textile yarn is a long continuous length of interlocked fibres which is suitable for using in
the production of textiles, sewing, crocheting, knitting , weaving, embroidery and rope making.
Microfiber-  synthetic fabric consisting of ultra-fine fibres. These fibres generally have
diameters measuring less than 10 micrometers and have denier weights under 0.7 D.
Comparatively, a single strand of silk is around 1 D, making microfiber one of the world’s finest
forms of textile fiber.
Generic-A generic term embracing all textile fabrics and felts. Cloth may be formed out of any
textile fibre wire, or material. Trade Name- Is of a man-made fibre is the name given by the fibre
manufacturer to his own product.
Textile Properties-Textiles are specific types of materials characterized by a unique combination
of properties including strength, flexibility, elasticity, softness, durability, heat insulation, low
weight, water absorbency/repellence, dye ability and resistance to chemicals.
Importance of Textiles

 Its helps us to identify the various types of fabrics and their properties.
 Its helps us to select or choose the suitable fabric for a given purpose.
 It helps one develop interest in clothing and textile.
Classification of Fibers
Fibres obtained from the natural origin can be classified into three different categories based on their
different natural origins. Classification of natural fibre is as follows – 1. Vegetable Fibres 2. Animal
Fibres 3. Mineral Fibres Vegetable Fibres These fibres are basically cellulosic fibres.

Test for Fibres

There are different tests which could be used for the identification of the textile fibers
such as burning test, microscopic test, solubility test, optical test, density test.
YARN

Yarn construction- Yarn are formed from fibres that are spun or twisted together. Yarn
can be made either from short ,length fibre or from filament fibres.
Types of Yarn- Wool, Single Yarn, Ply yard ,Cord Yarn, Organic Yarn and Alpaca Wool
Methods of Yarn-Weaving and knitting are the most common fabric construction
methods. Other methods include non-woven fabrics such as felting, laminating and
bonding. Fabrics are woven on a loom by interlacing two yarns at right angles to each
other. The horizontal yarns are called weft yarns.

Fabric Construction
 Fabrics can be constructed using the processes of weaving, knitting, bonding and
felting.
