Reading Comprehension 2 (Teamwork & Competition)

The document discusses reading comprehension and its components. It identifies three main components of reading: decoding, comprehension, and retention. Decoding is translating printed words to sounds, comprehension is fully understanding through intellect, and retention is keeping information in memory. There are also two levels of comprehension - surface/simple reading of literal meanings and facts, and in-depth/complex reading requiring interpretation and inference. Various strategies to increase reading comprehension are outlined such as reading silently, skimming, scanning, making educated guesses, and analyzing vocabulary.

Reading Comprehension

Reading
It is a cognitive process of decoding symbols to derive meaning from
a text (as in reading a passage or a book).
Three Components of Reading:
1. Decoding
2. Comprehension
3. Retention
Decoding
Decoding refers to the process of translating a printed word into a
sound.
Comprehension
According to Webster’s Dictionary, comprehension is ”the capacity
for understanding fully; the act or action of grasping with intellect”.
In other words, it’s the ability to absorb what is read.

One way to to make sure we comprehend what we read is the ability

to retain what is read.
Retention
•The condition of retaining (keeping) something. It could be in the short term
memory or long term memory.
•It’s a way of summarizing.
•It’s very important for comprehension because it extracts the essential
information from a text. For example:

1.The main idea.

2.The supporting details.
Skills for increasing comprehension
• Finding main ideas and supporting details/evidence.
• Making inferences and drawing conclusions.
• Recognizing a text’s patterns and organization.
• Summarizing/paraphrasing.
• Reading for information/details.
• Understanding opinions and detecting biases.
• Identifying tone, mood and style.
• Identifying rhetorical patterns such as (comparison, contrast, cause and effect, problem and solution,
description and narration).
Levels of Comprehension
• There are two main levels of comprehension while reading.

They are :
 Surface= simple reading
 In-depth= complex reading
Level one
Surface or simple reading concerns about literal meaning (what actually
stated) and does not require deep or sophisticated level of understanding.
This includes:
•Facts
•Details such as numbers, dates.
•Names
Level Two
• Complex reading unlike simple reading requires high and
sophisticated level of understanding.
• It requires interpretation of the implied meaning rather than what is
actually stated. Therefore, a reader must be able to;
 Draw inferences
Tap into prior knowledge/experience.
Analyze, synthesize and apply what is read into other contexts.
integrate new learning to old information.
Make logical leaps and educated guesses.

Strategies and Techniques for Increasing Reading
Comprehension
• Read silently to help you comprehend the text faster. Avoid pronouncing each word and try to
visually perceive phrases( not isolated words) instead.
• Skim the text to quickly identify the main ideas and skip over unknown words unless they are
crucial for the general understanding (try to infer the meaning from their contexts).
• Scan the text for specific information (e.g. a phone number, names or a historical date etc.…
• Make educated guesses when you aren’t certain (e.g. guess grammatical relationship, infer the
implied meaning from nonlinguistic clues from the context, situation etc.…
• Analyze vocabulary and identify keywords.
