Reading Comprehension 2 (Teamwork & Competition)
Reading Comprehension 2 (Teamwork & Competition)
Reading
It is a cognitive process of decoding symbols to derive meaning from
a text (as in reading a passage or a book).
Three Components of Reading:
1. Decoding
2. Comprehension
3. Retention
Decoding
Decoding refers to the process of translating a printed word into a
sound.
Comprehension
According to Webster’s Dictionary, comprehension is ”the capacity
for understanding fully; the act or action of grasping with intellect”.
In other words, it’s the ability to absorb what is read.
They are :
Surface= simple reading
In-depth= complex reading
Level one
Surface or simple reading concerns about literal meaning (what actually
stated) and does not require deep or sophisticated level of understanding.
This includes:
•Facts
•Details such as numbers, dates.
•Names
Level Two
• Complex reading unlike simple reading requires high and
sophisticated level of understanding.
• It requires interpretation of the implied meaning rather than what is
actually stated. Therefore, a reader must be able to;
Draw inferences
Tap into prior knowledge/experience.
Analyze, synthesize and apply what is read into other contexts.
integrate new learning to old information.
Make logical leaps and educated guesses.
Strategies and Techniques for Increasing Reading Comprehension
Strategies and Techniques for Increasing Reading
Comprehension
• Read silently to help you comprehend the text faster. Avoid pronouncing each word and try to
visually perceive phrases( not isolated words) instead.
• Skim the text to quickly identify the main ideas and skip over unknown words unless they are
crucial for the general understanding (try to infer the meaning from their contexts).
• Scan the text for specific information (e.g. a phone number, names or a historical date etc.…
• Make educated guesses when you aren’t certain (e.g. guess grammatical relationship, infer the
implied meaning from nonlinguistic clues from the context, situation etc.…
• Analyze vocabulary and identify keywords.
Guessing the meaning
