Arithmetic Sequence

The document discusses arithmetic sequences, including defining them as sequences where each term is obtained by adding a constant difference to the previous term. It provides examples of arithmetic sequences and teaches the formula to find the nth term of an arithmetic sequence. The activities involve identifying the rules of arithmetic sequences and finding missing terms in arithmetic sequences.

Objectives:

• Identify the rule of a given sequence;

• Define arithmetic sequence;
• Find the missing terms in a given
arithmetic sequence.
Activity 3: Getting to know you
Identify the rule of the following sequences:
1. 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
2. 2, 5, 8, 11, 14
3. 6, 2, -2, -6, -10
4. 1, 7, 13, 19, 25
5. 0, 5, 10, 15, 20
6. -1, 1, -1, 1, -1, 1
1. 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
get the difference between the terms
this would be the coefficient of n (if the 1st differences is eq.)
1n or n
use 1 as value of n in the “first” term, 2
for the “second” term & so on
6 = n + ___ 7 = n + ___ 8 = n + ___
6 = (1) + ___ 7 = (2) + ___ 8 = (3) + ___
6 = (1) + 5 7 = (2) + 5 8 = (3) + 5
use an as the nth term of the sequence; place “n”
in the equation; copy the constant if possible.
an = n + 5
Activity 3: Getting to know you
Identify the rule of the following sequences:
1. 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 an = n + 5
2. 2, 5, 8, 11, 14 an = 3n - 1
3. 6, 2, -2, -6, -10 an = -4n + 10
4. 1, 7, 13, 19, 25 an = 6n - 5
5. 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 an = 5n - 5
n
Activity 3, numbers 1 to 5 are examples
of arithmetic sequence.

What is arithmetic sequence?

An arithmetic sequence is a sequence in which
each term (after the first) is obtained by adding a
constant called the common difference.

In General we could write an arithmetic sequence like this:

{a, a+d, a+2d, a+3d, ... }
where:
a is the first term, and
d is the difference between the terms (called the "common
difference")
How do we find the nth term of
an arithmetic sequence?
Arithmetic Sequence
an = a1 + (n-1)d

Where:
an is the nth term
a1 is the first term
n is the number of terms
d is the common difference
Activity 4: What is missing?
Find the missing terms in the following
arithmetic sequence:
1. 7, __, __, __, 27
2. -4, __, __, __, 28
3. 9, __, __, -3, __
4. 12, __, 34, __, __
5. __, 9, __, __, -12
6. __, __, 28, __, 42
