The Art of Defining


Definitions are essential in school work as
they serve as a frame of reference for
discussions. For instance, concepts in your
respective subjects are understood because
terms are used in a specific concept or
process.

Definition clarifies the meaning of the


concept.

Central to developing concept papers is writing


definitions. Definitions are used to provide the
meaning of a particular word or term.

Definition may be classified into different ways


which include the following:

*FORMAL DEFINITION
*INFORMAL DEFINITION
*EXTENDED DEFINITION

: A formal definition is based on a concise, logic


pattern that includes as much information as it
can within a minimum amount of space. The

Extended definitions are essay length texts that use


different rhetorical patterns to show the meaning of a

Meanings, make sure that the features of the term do not overlap
with other similar concepts of the same class. (e.g., “A
skateboard is a mode of transport that has four wheels.”)

PRESENTING CONCEPTS

Concept are defined as abstract ideas. They are


understood to be the fundamental building blocks of the
concept behind principles, thoughts and beliefs.

Concepts may be explained through different modes or


patterns. Aside from definition, other ways such as
explication and explanations can be used to elucidate on
a concept.

A concept can be developed through explanation by


providing examples or situations.

CONCEPT PAPER
-Defines an idea or a concept and explains its
essence in order to clarify the “whatness” of the idea
or concept. It answers the questions: What is it and
what about it? (Dadufalza, 1996)

-Starts with a definition, either formal or informal, of


the term or concept and proceeds with an expanded
definition and an analytic description of the aspects
of the concept.

There are different parts of a concept paper.


These are:

1. Introduction
2. Body
3. Conclusion
FOCUS 2

The Introduction states the problem and covers the thesis


statement. It is where the background of the study belong.
It must have a clear description of the topic.
FOCUS 2
The body of the essay the main section of the concept paper. In
this part, you will elaborate on the specific claims made in your
thesis statement. To make the work manageable, consider
developing topic sentences for each supporting point from your
thesis statement. These topic sentences will then be used as the
main idea of each paragraph to make up the body of the essay.

Example:
Thesis statement: Plagiarism can be explained from cultural,
political, and educational perspectives.

Note that the three supporting claims in the thesis statement are
cultural, political, and educational perspectives. One example for
the topic sentence can be:

In some cultures, plagiarism is not found to be an


offensive practice since communities are not very
particular with individual contributions to group work.

On the other hand, explication employs a critical interpretation of


a concept. Referring to short passages from another source,
explication provides another perspective of a concept.

An explication interprets another work by examining the


concept/s presented. Through critical analysis of points raised in
text, a richer explanation of the concept is given to readers. This
may be done through comparison and contrast, description, cause
and effect, and other rhetorical modes.

In order to write an explication/clarification, consider the
questions posed and quoted portions of the paragraph:

1. In this piece, how does the author distinguish mad woman from
the attic and madwoman in the attic?

2. The phrase “madwoman from the attic” is taken from another


text (Gilbert and Gubar) but how does the author interpret
this? What example are given?

Concept paper are not only define, explicate, or explain something


but are also used beyond the classroom. For instance, companies
now require concept papers for projects before certain actions are
undertaken. Grant-giving bodies require concept papers from
researches before fund are awarded.
FOCUS 3

The conclusion of the concept paper reemphasizes the


thesis statement, provides a summary of the body of the
paper, and relates the importance of the concept in a
specific field or the world in general. In terms of
difficulty, the conclusion is the easiest to write since you
will be referring to the previous parts you drafted.
