This document presents an overview of an automobile project based learning presentation. It introduces automobiles and defines them as self-propelled vehicles designed to carry 1-6 people on roads. It then outlines some key components of automobiles, including the engine, clutch, gearbox, differential, and steering system. The engine section further explains the types of engines as internal or external combustion and classifications like compression ignition vs spark ignition as well as 2-stroke vs 4-stroke engines. In summary, the document provides a high-level introduction to automobiles and outlines some of their core mechanical components.

INTRODUCTION
What is an Automobile?
Automobile  is a wheeled passenger vehicle that carries
its own motor(self propelled). These are designed to run
primarily on roads, to have seating for one to six people,
typically have four wheels, and be constructed principally
for the transport of people rather than goods.
COMPONENTS OF AUTOMOBILE

1- ENGINE

•An important part where the

mechanism occurs.
•An engine or motor is a machine
designed to convert energy into useful
mechanical motion.
TYPES OF ENGINES
.
•The internal combustion engine is an engine in which the combustion
of a fuel occurs with an oxidizer in a combustion chamber that is an
integral part of the working fluid flow circuit. Eg:-Ships heavy duty
machinery, motorcycles, automobiles boats, trucks ,aircraft etc.

•An external combustion engine (EC engine) is a heat engine where

an internal working fluid is heated by combustion i.e. combustion take
place out side comb chamber of the engine. Example- Steam Engine
CLASSIFICATION OF ENGINES

1.By type of Ignition - Compression Ignition/Spark Ignition

2.By Mechanical construction - 4 Stroke/2-Stroke

COMPRESSION IGNITION ENGINES

•Basically Diesel engines.
•Combustion is initiated by heat, on its own.

SPARK IGNITION ENGINES

•Basically Petrol engines, LPG engines, CNG engines.
•Combustion is initiated by a spark from a spark plug.
Four Stroke Petrol Engine

• Intake
• Compression
• Power
• Exhaust
2-CLUTCH

•  The clutch is the mechanical device

which transfers the rotational power
from the engine to the wheels in any
manual vehicle. The clutch is the part of
the car which connects two or more
rotating shafts.
• The function and purpose of a  clutch is
to transmit torque from a rotating
driving motor to a transmission.
3-GEAR BOX
• An industrial gearbox is an
enclosed system that transmits
mechanical energy to an output
device, for an example a motor.
•  A gearbox can be used to modify
the ratio of speed, torque and
rate of rotation sent to the output
device.
4-DIFFERENTIAL
• Differential receives torque from
the gear box, modifies and
transmits it to the wheels in a
perpendicular direction.
• Differential also allows each
wheel to rotate at different
speeds, especially when the
vehicle takes a turn.
5-STEERING SYSTEM
•  Turning of the automobile
towards left or right or on the
curved path is provided
through steering mechanism.
• The steering system is
required to be quite accurate
as the automobile should turn
accurately along with the
path.
