Respiratory System
It is the system, consisting of tubes
and is responsible for the exchange of
gases.

Humans breathe by filtering

incoming air and transporting it into the
microscopic alveoli where gases are
exchanged.
FUNCTIONS
1. Warms air to match your body
temperature and moisturizes it to the
humidity level your body needs.
2. Delivers oxygen to the cells in your
body.

3. Removes waste gases, including

carbon dioxide, from the body when you
exhale.

4. Protects your airways from

harmful substances and irritants
 The organs of the Respiratory System can
be divided into two group “Structurally”

PARTS & FUNCTIONS OF THE
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
 THE NOSE  
• the organ through which the air enters and is
filtered

• It has 2 portions : the external and internal.

• The external portion is supported by a framework

of bone and cartilage covered with skin and lined
with mucous membrane.

• The internal portion is a large cavity in the skull.

 NASAL

through the nose in which the air is
warmed , cleaned and moistened

• Interior area of the nose, lined with a

sticky mucous membrane and contains
tiny, surface hairs.

regions of the respiratory tract
PHARYNX
• It is a funnel-shaped tube and also PHARYNX

called as the “throat”

• The membrane-lined cavity

behind the nose and mouth,
connecting them to the
esophagus.
LARYNX
• the hollow muscular organ
forming an air passage to the
lungs and holding the vocal cords LARYNX
in humans

• It is also called as the voice box.

TRACHEA
• It is called as the windpipe

• It is an empty tube that serves as

passageway of air into the lungs.

• It extends from the larynx to the 5th

thoracic vertebra where it divides into
the right and left bronchi.
 THE BRONCHI
• Bronchus (singular form)

• Bronchi (plural)

• also called as bronchial tubes

• two branching tubes that connect the trachea to the lungs

• They are the two main air passages into the lungs.

• They are composed of the:

• Right Primary Bronchus
- leading to the right lung.
• Left Primary Bronchus”
- leading to the left lung.
 THE BRONCHIOLES

- the finer subdivisions of the bronchi;

- hairlike tubes that connect to alveoli
 THE LUNGS  

- are pair of spongy, air-filled

organs located on either
side of the chest (thorax).

- This is the main and

primary organ of the
respiratory system
 THE ALVEOLI
- also called airsacs;
- Tiny air sacs at the end of the
bronchioles (tiny branches of air
tubes) in the lungs.

- allow the gas exchange in lungs.

- It is where the lungs and the

bloodstream exchange carbon
dioxide and oxygen.
THE DIAPHRAGM

The diaphragm is a large

muscle that lies flat at the
bottom of the chest
cavity.

The diaphragm aids in

breathing by moving up
