Motorcycle Clutch System
Motorcycle Clutch System
system
Objectives:
After this report, the students will be able to:
a. know the functions and parts of the motorcycle clutch system,
b. assemble and disassemble the clutch system, and
c. identify the problem of clutch system.
In manual transmission motorcycles, the clutch is the
component in the engine that engages and disengages
power from the engine to the transmission in order to
change gears. In other words, it enables the rider to turn on
or off power to the rear wheel to change gears.
Managing the finances of buying a new bike can be crucial to
enjoying the full experience that comes along with getting a
new ride. You can use an Online Bike EMI Calculator to help
make your purchase. If you’re looking to buy a motorcycle,
or if you already own one, knowing how its components
work will allow you to use it more efficiently and not
damage it.
• Components and of a Motorcycle Clutch and their functions:
• The motorcycle clutch works through a clutch assembly consisting of
numerous components including primary drive gear, clutch basket, clutch
plate, clutch hub, clutch springs, lever, clutch cable and pressure plates.
• COMPONENTS
Primary Drive - A gear assembly in which power from the engine crankshaft
Goes out through a smaller gear, which drives a larger gear in the basket.
it is Connected to the engine crankshaft and the first point of motion for a CVT transmission. This
clutch closes at higher RPMs, allowing for smooth power transfer
• Clutch Basket - A basket which contains the entire assembly, having teeth on
its outer surface which are connected to and driven by the primary drive.
The clutch basket is an assembly of parts including the basket, starter gear, clutch
driven gear, dampers, and backing plate. The starter gear is pressed into the clutch
basket, and the driven gear, dampers, and backing plate are riveted or screwed in
place.
• Clutch Hub - It is between the basket and the pressure plate, and is rotates
by the main shaft through its centre.
The clutch hub is placed between clutch basket and pressure plate. The clutch plates are mounted
on it. It has teeth at the centre hole which rotate with the main shaft. It means it is connected with
the engine.
• Clutch Plate - There are two types of clutch plates, the drive/friction plate
and the driven/steel plate. The drive plate is the interface between the clutch
basket and the pressure plate. The driven plate is the interface between the
pressure plate and the clutch hub. When they rotate together, power is
transferred from the engine to the transmission.
There are two types of clutch plates, the drive/friction plate and the driven/steel plate. The drive plate is
the interface between the clutch basket and the pressure plate. The driven plate is the interface between
the pressure plate and the clutch hub. When they rotate together, power is transferred from the engine to
the transmission.
The assembly consists of a pressure plate on the outermost side which faces the engine cover. As
the name suggests, with the help of springs which are bolted on the outside, the pressure plate
acts like a lid which pushes in and pulls out to compress and decompress the “Clutch Pack“
• Clutch Springs - Short coil that hold the clutch plates through spring tension.
They disengaged the pressure plate from the clutch plates.
Clutch springs can be found in use on most motorcycle clutch assemblies. The function of these
short coil springs is to continuously hold the friction and driven plates together through spring
tension, preventing slippage except when the clutch lever is engaged.
• Clutch Lever - Lever located at the left handlebar of the bike that gives input
to the clutch assembly.
It is a lever you grab repeatedly while shifting gears. You also know that it disengages the power
going from the engine towards the rear wheel when you pull it in.
• Cable - Connects the level to the clutch assembly.
The clutch cable is the component through which the rider's input passes to the clutch's internals.
The cable itself is designed to slide easily inside a casing with connections at each end.
8 signs of bad clutch
• Weak acceleration
• Grinding gears
• Loose clutch pedal
• Sticky clutch pedal
• Other noises
• Won’t shift into gears
• Burning smell
