Lecture 10 - The Textbook Method of Teaching

The document discusses the textbook method of teaching. It provides background on how textbooks became central to education systems in the 1800s. A textbook is defined as a book that teaches a subject used in schools. The textbook method provides structure for inexperienced teachers but no single textbook can meet all needs. Teachers must adapt textbooks to fit their students and can supplement textbooks with other materials. While textbooks provide organization, they also have disadvantages like not reflecting student interests and promoting over-reliance on the text.

The Textbook Method of
Teaching

1
Background of the Textbooks
• In 1800s different countries
developed new systems so that
masses of people could get
education.
• Classrooms became the central
point
• As a consequence, teaching and
learning were to be based on
textbooks.
2
Definitions of Textbook
• According to Oxford Advanced Learner’s
Dictionary, a textbook is defined as “a
book that teaches a particular subject and
that is used especially in schools and
colleges” (OALD, 2000)

• A book used as a standard source

of information on a particular subject.

3
The Textbook Method of Teaching
• The textbook provides confidence and security for an
inexperienced teacher.

• There is no ideal textbook, ideal for every teacher, ideal for

every group of learners and ideal in every teaching situation.
• A single textbook does not meet diverse needs of the learners.
This generates a need for textbook adaptation at the activity,
unit and syllabus levels.
• Some teachers reject the textbook approach to learning and wish
to make substantial changes to the textbook they need to use.
• Adapting a textbook to fit actual needs of a group of learners is
a demanding and time-consuming process.
4
The Textbook Method of Teaching
Graves (2000) suggests that, in order to
minimize difficulties when selecting
textbooks, teachers should:

• Use the textbook as a resource for

students, but not the only resource

• Use a textbook as a guide, be free to

modify, evaluate, develop, change,
eliminate, or add to the material in the
textbook, supplement the textbook
with lots of outside readings.
