Cell Referencing

There are 3 types of cell referencing in Excel: relative, absolute, and mixed. Relative references adjust when copied or filled, absolute references do not change row or column when copied or moved, and mixed references change either the row or column but not both. Cells or ranges can also be named for easier reference rather than using cell addresses. Names can be applied through the name box, define name option, or name manager. Excel formulas include financial, logical, text, date/time, lookup/reference, mathematical, and statistical functions. Common formula errors include division by zero, null value, invalid name, wrong/invalid data type, text truncated, invalid cell reference, #N/A error, and numeric error.

Cell Referencing

There are 3 types of Cell Referencing in MS Excel:

 Relative Cell Referencing – These are basic cell

references which adjust and change when copied or
when using autofill.
 Absolute Cell Referencing – When a formula is copied
or moved to a different location, the cell references in
that formula do not change and refer to the existing
formula cells only.
 Mixed Cell Referencing – This contains a mix of
relative and absolute cell referencing i.e. either one of
row or the column would change but the other would
remain constant.
Naming a Cell Range
In excel, it is possible for a user to apply to
name to a cell or a range of cells rather than
using their cell addresses. The flowing are the
ways to name a cell range :-
 Name Box – The selected cells or cell range
can be renamed by entering a name in the
name box.
 Define Name – This option is found under
Formulas tab and where the selected cells or
cell range can be renamed.
 Name Manager – Through this option, all the
renamed cells or cell ranges can be seen, in
addition to editing and deleting the existing
renamed ranges.
Types of Formulas in Excel
The following functions are available in MS Excel:

 Financial Functions – They can be used to calculate interest

rates, loan payments, depreciation and other financial values.
 Logical Functions – They can be used to evaluate the
contents of a cell location. The results of the logical test can
be either true or false.
 Text Functions – They can be used to manipulate text values
in excel by formatting them.
 Date & Time Functions – They can be used to extract
information from, and perform operations on, Excel Dates
and Times.
Types of Formulas in Excel Contd.
 Lookup & Reference Functions -  They can be used to work
with arrays of data, and are particularly useful when you need
to cross reference between different data sets.
 Mathematical Functions – They can be used to calculate
values based on what is in cells, perform operations on a cell
content, fetch values after an operation based on your search
criteria and much more.
 Statistical Functions – They can be used when a
mathematical process is required for a range of cells, such as
summing the values in several cell locations.
Formula Error Types
Types of Formula Errors that can occur:
 #DIV/0
 #NULL!
 #NAME?
 #VALUE!
 ####
 #REF!
 #N/A
 #NUM!
