Technical Solution Presentation

The document describes a process for producing hydrogen gas from wastewater. The process involves pre-treating the wastewater through dark fermentation to produce methane. The methane is then converted to hydrogen through sorption-enhanced steam methane reforming. Downstream processing includes hydrogen sulfide removal, cooling, and membrane filtration to upgrade the hydrogen purity to 74-80% from the initial 63%. The overall process is capable of producing 39 cubic meters of hydrogen per day at high purity levels.

Introduction
❖ Wastewater rich in starch
❖ Will later be further developed for comparison
Pre-treatment
❖ Degradation of starch
Dark Fermentation

❖ Temperature - 30-49
❖ pH - 5.5-6.5
❖ HRT - (8-12) h
❖ μmax- 0.24 h-1 (glucose)-0.37 h-1(fructose)
❖ YH - 2.4L/LD at 30 kg COD/m3/d
❖ Working volume based on HRT(10h) - 16-20m3
❖ Volume of tank- 50m3
❖ Qp - 48,200L/d/Tank
Methanogenesis
❖ Temperature of 50 ℃
❖ pH between 6.5 - 7.2
❖ Retention time: 10 days
❖ YCH4/HAc = 0.21 g/g
❖ 953 m3 CH4/ year → Revenue of 1.25
million $
Hydrogen Sulfide Removal

❖ biological solution with Thiobacillus: oxidation of H2S

❖ mild conditions: between 30 and 40 °C

❖ low loss of hydrogen

❖ microaerobic conditions
Conversion of methane to hydrogen gas

(I) CH4 + H2O ↔ CO +3 H2 ∆H= +206 kJ/mol

(II) CH4 + 2 H2O ↔ CO2+4 H2 ∆H= +165 kJ/mol

❖ Usual process: Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) where for each reaction (I) and (II) a process unit are
needed, in case of carbon capture at least three
❖ Process here: Sorption-enhanced SMR where both reaction (I) and (II) are in one reactor, but also a CO2
adsorbing material
❖ Second reactor for regeneration of adsorption material
❖ SE-SMR can be run under 450 – 490°C at 180 – 890 kPa, producing H2 with >80% purity
