Lecture 10 Eco Labeling

This document discusses eco-labeling and provides information on: 1) Eco-labels certify that products are environmentally friendly by using sustainable materials and manufacturing processes. They allow consumers to identify products that are safer for the environment and human health. 2) There is growing demand for eco-labels from consumers concerned about pollution. Manufacturers use eco-labels to protect and expand markets by demonstrating their environmental commitments. 3) The eco-labeling process involves an environmental audit and obtaining third-party certification that a product meets set criteria for raw materials, packaging, use, and disposal.

Eco-Labels

• ISO 14020 to ISO 14025

• GEN: Global Ecolabelling Network

4

Eco-Labeling

• Provides brief information on environment related

product qualities.
• Enables consumers to identify products that are
▫ environmentally safe;
▫ manufactured using eco-friendly materials
▫ do not contain chemicals that are harmful to the user.
“eco-friendliness” is an additional product quality, used
for marketing and advertising purposes.
• Generally these labels are voluntary & mostly used for the
promotion of the products on the basis of their
environmentally friendly characteristics.
5

NEED FOR ECO-LABELLING

• Consumers concern for adverse impacts of industrial pollution
on the environment health.
• Mounting pressure on industry to adopt “eco-friendly”
chemicals and manufacturing processes particularly in the textile
sector.
• Eco-labels that certify the “eco-friendliness” of the textile
product are now increasingly demanded by consumers.
• Currently, these are required mainly in Western Europe, with
Germany being the most demanding
• Removal of tariff barriers under the WTO Agreement on Tariff
and Trade in 2005.
• Manufacturers wishing to protect their existing markets and
expand into new ones may well be required to obtain an eco-
label that is acceptable to their client.

Types of Eco-Labeling
• a voluntary, multiple-criteria based, 3rd party program that

Type 1 awards a license that authorizes the use of environmental

labels on products indicating overall environmental prefer
ability of a product within a particular product category based
on life cycle considerations

Type • informative environmental self-declaration claims

2
Type • Voluntary programs that provide quantified environmental
data of a product, under pre-set categories of parameters set by

3
a qualified 3rd party and based on LCA, and verified by that or
another qualified third party
