Lesson 1 - Materials That Absorb Water

This document describes an activity where students classify materials based on their ability to absorb water. Students are instructed to observe how materials like rubber balls, cotton balls, sponges, and towels interact with water, recording whether each material absorbs water or not. The activity aims to teach students that materials can be classified based on their porosity and ability to absorb liquids. Porous materials like cotton and sponges readily absorb water, while non-porous materials like plastic and rubber do not.

Materials that Absorb and Do

not Absorb Water

Objectives
1. Describe materials based on the ability
to absorb water.
2. Classify materials based on the ability to
absorb water.
Motivation
Go around the classroom.

What are the things that you can see

around the classroom?
Review
Classify the things in your list to the following:
SOLID LIQUID GAS
Presentation of the new Lesson

What happens when I put this cloth in a

basin of water.
ABSORB- to take in (something, such as a
liquid) in a natural or gradual way
Materials can also be grouped based on
their ability to absorb water
Exploration
1.Go to your respective group.
2.Choose among your group the person who will act as timer,
recorder, leader and presenter.
3.The leaders will get the materials from the teacher.
4.Put the materials one by one in a basin.
5.Lift up the material and squeeze. Let the water drip down
on the basin. Did the material come out? Did the material
get wet? Is the material get wet? Is the material heavier
when wet?
6.Record the observations in the chart.

paper, dropper

1. Rubber balls

2. Cotton balls

3. Sponge

4. Face towel
Guide Questions
1.What characteristics did you observe from each of the
materials before placing them in water? When you squeeze
each of the materials what comes out of them?
2. Did all the materials absorb water?
3. Which of the materials absorb water? What are these
materials made of?
4. Which of the materials did not absorb water? What are
these materials made of?
Guide Questions
1.What are he characteristics of each material before placing
them in water?
2. When you added water to the material what happens to
the water? To the material?
3. When you lifted and squeezed the material did water come
out?
Is the material heavier when wet?
1.What have you found out based on our activity?

Materials in our environment can be classified on their ability

to absorb water. Some materials can absorb water more than
others.
Remember this

• Absorb- to take in something in a natural or gradual way

• Porous- having small holes that allow air or liquid to pass through
• Non-porous-materials that do not allow air or liquid to pass through

• Cotton is very porous, which makes it a natural absorber of water.

• Plastic as a non-porous material, does not allow water to pass through.

• Porous materials are materials having small holes that allow air or liquid to
pass through.
Elaboration

1. Why would some people prefer to use plastic

bag than a paper bag?
2. During rainy days, what kind of material are you
going to use to prevent you from getting wet?
Explain why.
Evaluation
Identify whether the material absorbs water or not. Write
ABSORB or DO NOT ABSORB
