This module aims to develop:
• An understanding of the techniques and
approaches used to capture, store and
analyse data generated by organisations
for purposes of business intelligence.
• In a digital age it is important for
businesses to make use of data captured
about its their entities.

data presentation, pattern recognition
techniques and data models that can be

• Descriptive data models can be used to gain

• The module provides students with:
– An opportunity to explore, review and examine
how large scale data can be collected, stored and
managed in industry to enhance the decision
making power of managers.
– Sufficient understanding of the current theory of
decision making and its applications that address
modern and future business needs using business

Analytics Overview
• Analytics…a relatively new term/buzz-word
• Analytics…the process of developing actionable
decisions or recommendations for actions based on
insights generated from historical data
• According to the Institute for Operations Research
and Management Science (INFORMS)
– Analytics represents the combination of computer
technology, management science techniques, and
statistics to solve real problems.

Three types of Business Analytics:

– Descriptive:
• What happened;
• What is happening;

– Predictive:
• What will happen;
• Why will it happen;

– Prescriptive;
• What should I do;
• Why should I do it;

• Descriptive or reporting analytics
• Answering the question of what happened
• Retrospective analysis of historic data

Predictive Analytics
• Aims to determine what is likely to happen in the
future (foreseeing the future events)

• Aims to determine the best possible decision
