Advance Traffic Management system is an integrated solution to
manage highway traffic through real time information processing and
analysis. To ensure round the clock safety, it is of prime importance to
provide real time and precise information to users about the road
condition, traffic situation, incidents and weather conditions on the
highway.

Its purpose is to enable concessionaires, highway/road operators or

government authorities to monitor complete highway by various
sensors & technologies to take corrective actions that ultimately results
in assurance of safe journey for road users, enhanced efficiency,
productivity, mobility and better highway traffic management system.

Radio Mobile Station (RMS)

Mobile radio station will be located at whole stretch with the

each Radio tower coverage about 60 Km as per site
conditions, & it will be communicate with all vehicle
mounted Radio mobile units & Walky-Talkies as whole
stretch for emergency uses for route patrolling & traffic
management & control room’s voice communication

A typical radio system for highway consists of the following :

• Vehicle mount mobile A typical radio system for highway
• hand-held
• base station (repeater)
• control room equipment

Variable Message System(VMS)

Variable message sign boards shall be installed as per desired

location of the client & NHAI’s independent consultant & connected
with ATMS control room & will be display any emergency or
required message as per the requirement on immediate basis from
the control room.
Purpose of VMS in ITS applications
•Danger Warning Sign –weather, congestion, road closure
• Informative Messages – useful traffic information, rerouting
• Control
• Lane Control – Lane change/closure/merge
• Speed Control
• Prescriptions – “no overtaking”

Meteorology Data Station (MDS)

The meteorological Station shall be installed at suitable locations in

the Main control centre /sub centers/ integrators to provide
meteorological information from the Expressway through Control
Centre via Transmission System. These Sensors are for temperature,
wind speed, humidity and visibility.

Other sensors also be added if required. All sensors are connected to

the Data Logger from where the data is sent to control room’s
computer & Met application.

Meteorological station’s integrated sensors

•Temperature Sensor
•Wind speed Sensor
•Wind direction Sensor
•Humidity Sensor
•Visibility Sensor
•Rain gaze Sensor
•Road surface temperature sensor
Closed Circuit Television surveillance (CCTV)

CCTVs are installed (pole mounted) on critical monitoring points , such as road
junctions/crossings. The cameras are typically PTZ (Pan, tilt and Zoom) having
at least 36x zoom and night mode. The PTZ controls are at the Control Room.
The video images are transmitted to a monitor (or simple television set) over
OFC.
The key factors while installing cameras are :
• cameras installed at road crossings/incident sites
• must have zoom capability
• must have night mode
• proximity to power
• dome type protection (tinted plastic casing
is used so that the camera inside the
housing is not visible)
• lightning protection
PTZ (CCTV Camera Location)

CCTV 1- 22+131 CCTV2 - 62+150

(Video Incident Detection System)

The purpose of the VIDS is to sense, detect and record the incident.
The system shall be an intelligent image detection using camera.
The VIDS shall have inbuilt intelligence to ascertain when the image
has meaningfully deviated from the standard image originally
recorded.
