Take "OAIM" and Fire

The document introduces the OAIM format for writing procedures in science classes, which structures procedures into Object, Action, Instrument, and Measurement sections. It provides an example procedure for determining the density of an irregular solid using OAIM format and has students practice writing their own density experiment procedure using OAIM. The document also discusses how to create a materials list and data table to accompany an experiment written in OAIM format.

Take “OAIM” and

Inquiry Procedure Writing for Science Classes
Linda Detwiler
Scenario – A girl is breaking her first board in her karate class.
Your task is to create a procedure that will test a hypothesis.

Let’s assume that you have a materials list and a data table but if
you have time, you can create a list and a table.

We will focus on how to write a procedure for this class however.

Your goal is to determine the density of an irregular solid.

You will have 10 minutes to write a procedure for this activity……

Density Activity
Based on the narrative and the articles provided,
design an experiment to test the hypothesis that
the wood used in class is pine wood, which is a
softwood.
✘ In yellow, highlight the elements of your
procedure that you think ALL procedures
should have in order to be correct.
✘ In green, highlight the elements of your
procedure that you think are unique to your
procedure.
Rotate around the room and read the other procedures.

✘ Put a ✓ next to any highlighted portions

that you ALSO had in your procedure.
✘ Put a X next to any highlighted portion that
you DID NOT have in your procedure.
✘ Put a :) on procedures that you think would
correctly find the density of the object.
✘ Put :( on procedures that you do not think
would correctly find the density of the
object.
My Procedure
1. Measure the mass of the piece of wood (called a shard) with
a balance.
2. Add approximately 50 mL of sand to a dry graduated
cylinder and measure this initial volume.
3. Add the wood shard to the graduated cylinder with sand.
Covering the mouth of the cylinder, shake the cylinder until
the sand covers the shard. If there is not enough sand to
cover the shard, remove the shard and add more sand,
repeating step #2. Measure the new volume of the sand and
wood shard.
4. Repeat this procedure with different wood shards from the
class, obtaining new mass and volume measurements in each
trial.
What is OAIM?
OAIM: A procedural format that addresses the common
requirements of experimental design.
✘ Object: This is the focus of the procedural step. (Noun)
✘ Action: This is the action taking place in the procedural
step. (Verb)
✘ Instrument: This is the equipment used in the procedural
step to make a quantitative measurement or qualitative
observation. (Material)
✘ Measurement: This is the quantitative measurement or
qualitative observation made in the procedural step.
(Observations and Data)

of the wood shard

Measure the mass of the wood shard with a balance.
Design an experiment to test the hypothesis about _____. Any equipment that
would usually be found in a high school physics laboratory is available.
(i) What quantities would be measured? (1 point)
(ii)What equipment would be used for the measurements, and how
would that equipment be used? (1 point)
(iii)Describe the procedure to be used to test the hypothesis. Give
enough detail so that another student could replicate the experiment.
Include a labeled diagram of the experimental setup. (2 points)
Using OAIM to make a material list
and data table
1. Measure the mass of the wood shard
with a balance. Materials: wood shards, balance, graduated cylinder,
2. Add approximately 50 mL of sand sand

to a dry graduated cylinder and Mass, Volume, Volume, Volume,s Density,

shard (g) sand sand and hard shard
measure this initial volume. (mL) shard (mL) (g/mL)
3. Add the wood shard to the (mL) [Vf-Vi] [M/V]

graduated cylinder with sand.

Covering the mouth of the cylinder,
shake the cylinder until the sand
covers the shard. Measure the new
volume of the sand and wood shard.

the solutions lead to a double tube

Peanut Butter and Jelly
Your Task is to……..

Write an experimental design for making a

peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
Include a materials list and a procedure.

Use OAIM to write your procedure.
