LEMONTREE HOTELS Shakeel Sheikh

EMBA2023@AIM
BACKGROUND
 2004: First hotel with 49 rooms; 2022: ~8,250 rooms in 84 hotels across 52 destinations, in
India and abroad (Dubai, Bhutan, Nepal), under its various brands (3 stars to 5 starts).
 This award-winning company has been recognized nationally and globally for its
innovative human capital practices.
 Lemon Tree believes that the brand should stand for more than ‘just profit’. In a Lemon
Tree Hotel, these physical, mental or intellectual limitations do not qualify as reason
enough to deprive someone of an opportunity.
 We may be greeted with a person who is deaf or physically handicapped. The restaurant
staff may include persons who have Downs Syndrome, but despite their physical
limitations, work long shifts – and always serve with a smile. The bellboy could be one
who has a hearing impairment and the housekeeping staff could have been an acid attack
victim.
DIVERSITY & INCLUSION
 Approximately 2.2% of the Indian population identifies as disabled, although the true
number is likely much higher. And recruitment platform Equiv.in reports that the
unemployment rate among disabled people is over 70%.
 Lemon Tree has defined the goal as mainstreaming ‘Opportunity Deprived Indians’ i.e.
ODIs into its workforce (currently 17-18 percent of the workforce). ODIs include:
 Physical Disability: Speech and Hearing Impaired (SHI); Orthopedically Handicapped (OH); Acid
Survivors (AS); Going forward, also Visually Impaired (VI), Low Vision (LV);
 Intellectual Disability: Down Syndrome; Autism
 Marginalized sections of society: Below Poverty Line (BPL) individuals; Widowed or
abandoned/battered/destitute/divorced women; Orphans/abandoned girls; Individuals from economically
weak families; Communities who do not get education and employment opportunities easily i.e. North
Eastern States, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, tribal/interior areas of any state, etc.
ACHIEVEMENTS
 More than 100 awards since inception (2004 – 2022)
 2020: Awarded GO-MMT Travelers’ Choice Award.
 2019: Multiple awards, including -
 Investing in People Award during Tourism For Tomorrow Awards 2019 organized by World Travel &
Tourism Council in Seville, Spain.
 Best Differently Abled Friendly Hotel at FICCI Travel & Tourism Excellence Awards 2019.
