Komal Kurhade

The document summarizes a seminar presentation on substation automation systems. It defines a substation as part of the electrical generation, transmission, and distribution system that transfers voltage from high to low levels. It describes the key components of a substation automation system including digital relays, block diagrams of the station, bay and process levels, and advantages like automatic supervision and fault detection. The conclusion states that substation automation provides real-time information through intelligent electronic devices that protect equipment and generate data.

Introduction

• Substation Automation (SA) is a system to enable an

electric utility to remotely monitor, control and coordinate
the distribution components installed in the substation.
- High speed microprocessor based Remote Terminals
Units (RTUS) or Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) are
used for substation automation and protection.
.These IEDs are installed in strategic locations for collection
of system data and automatic protection of substation
equipment.
What is sub-station

1) Sub-station is part of electrical generation

transmission and distribution system
2) substation Transfer voltage from high to low
of the revers (step up or step down)and porform
other important functions
Digital Relay
Digital Relay

The relay is to quickly remove from service any

equipment that might suffer damage or
otherwise affect the operation of the system

Station level

Station level functions have two categories of functions. data from multiple bays or
substation level data. These functions are used to give the control commands on the
primary equipments and collect the substation data like voltage, current, power
factor etc. from the bay level devices.
Bay level
• A bay is a power line within an electrical
substation which connects a circuit (such as a
power line or transformer) to a busbar .
Process level

It consists of all the switchyard devices

which are hardwired using copper cables
Adventages

• Automatic supervision of interlocks.

• Graphical presentations of safety procedures.
• Local & global alarm & warnings.
• Detect fault location - useful for distribution
systems.
• Equipment diagnostics.
• Intelligent interlocking system.
• Diagnostics of disturbances.

Conclusion

• Substation automation, control and

communication provide the information that
is required in real time. Typically, the
Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) that
protect, sense and generate data on
substation equipment operate independently.
