4 Inverse Functions

The document discusses inverse functions and how to find them. It provides examples of functions and their inverses. There is a 3 step process for finding the inverse of a function: 1) Swap the function f(x) with y, 2) Rearrange to make x the subject, 3) Swap all y's with x's and write the inverse as f^-1(x). Examples show applying this process to functions like f(x) = 2x^2 - 7 and f(x) = xy - y = 3.

Inverse Functions
A function takes and input and produces an output.
The inverse of a function does the opposite: it describes how we get
from the output back to the input.

Full Method

If , find .

𝑥 STEP 1: Write the output as

𝑦= +1
?5 This is purely for convenience.

𝑥 STEP 2: Get the input in terms

𝑦 −1= of the output (make the
? 5 subject).
This is because the inverse function is
the reverse process, i.e. finding the
input in terms of the output .

𝑓 −1 ( 𝑥 )=5 𝑥 −5 STEP 3: Swap back for and

? back for .
This is because the input to a function
is generally written as rather than .
But technically would be correct!
