A descriptive essay

a type of essay which asks the students to give a

description of something; for example, a person,
place, incident, or an emotion, or an event. It is
a detailed description, where the writer is
painting a picture in words.
Peculiarity: A descriptive essay allows you to explain your point of view in your own way.
You should give a description of every aspect of the topic so that a reader can
feel as if he has personally experienced that.
A descriptive essay can be used to describe almost anything. For example, you could be
asked to write about the most embarrassing moment of your life, or the idea of travel. It's
up to you to make the topic engaging for the reader.
There are five basic features of a descriptive essay that
distinguishes it from other writing types:

1. Sensory Details - A great descriptive essay appeals to the emotions

of the audience and forms an association for them. In this essay type, a
writer paints a picture with words so they have to be really engaging and
appealing to the senses.
2. Central Theme - The content of your descriptive essay is shaped
according to the central or major theme. Make sure to define the central
theme explicitly and focus it on one single point.
3. Figurative Language - A key to writing an impactful descriptive essay
is to use figurative language throughout the content. Use metaphors,
similes, adverbs, and adjectives to describe settings and characters.
4. Precise Language - the vocabulary you use for the content should be
appropriate and accurate. The language, as well as the tone, should
reflect the major theme of the essay vividly.
5. Organization of Ideas - Arrange all your ideas and information in a
properly structured manner.
Descriptive Essay Format
Descriptive essays can vary, depending on what you're describing.
This essay structure can help you describe most things, though,
thoroughly and easily.
• Introduction: Introduce the topic you're describing, and give a
quick over view of what it is.
• Thesis statement: This is where you'll outline your description of
the topic. You'll go into more detail in the main body.
• Main body: This can be taken by three separate paragraphs.
The first paragraph can focus on a detailed description of the
topic itself. The second will cover the environment surrounding
the topic. Finally, the third topic will focus on a sensual and
emotive description, which covers how the topic affects those
interacting with it.
• Conclusion: this will draw all your points together, without
introducing anything new.
How to Write Descriptive Essay
• First, look into the topic you've been given. At first, it
may seem quite dry, but you can broaden the idea with
some creative writing.
• Gather any evidence you plan to use. Descriptive essays
don't require as much research as others, but you'll still
need to back up your points.
• Write an outline. Write in bullet points, and lay out what
you're going to say.
• Write your essay. You can fill in the blanks on your
outline, and you'll find that it's much easier to write using
this method.
• Proofread and edit. Before you hand it in, give your essay
a read through for any errors you've made.
What are the 4 elements of descriptive
writing?

The four elements of descriptive writing are:

1.Metaphors
2.Similes
3.Adjectives
4.Adverbs
Tips:
Introduction:
1. Introduce the reader to the topic and what the essay
will be about.
2. Do not put all the details here; just give a brief
introduction to the main topic.
3. Start the introductory paragraph with suspense so that
you can capture the eye of the reader. You can even
pose a question so that the reader tries to find the
answer in your essay
4. Describe the topic in 2 or 3 sentences by using vivid
language. Use clear and concise language that leaves
the reader in a satisfying situation. Use of adjectives
and adverbs will also help you write good sentences.
Main body:

1. Describe all the points in detail. The idea

should come out at the beginning.
2. The paragraphs should be interlinked by
good transition words. Organize your
paragraphs in a way that they make sense.
3. As you are telling a story, create some
drama. Make your essay an exciting and
interesting piece of writing.
Conclusion:
• You should reaffirm the thesis statement.
• Restate your thesis statement and give a
short reminder to the reader what the
essay was required to cover.

Proofreading
• Take a short break from your work
• After taking a break, read your essay from the reader’s
