SEXUAL HEALTH
Sexual health is defined as a state
of physical, emotional and social
well-being in relation to sexuality
not merely the absence of disease,
dysfunction or infirmity. It requires a
positive and respectful approach to
sexuality and sexual relationships
for the possibility of pleasurable
and safe sexual experiences.
SEXUALLY-TRANSMITTED DISEASES
(STDs)
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
or sexually transmitted infections
(STIs) are spread generally through
sexual contact, including anal,
vaginal, or oral sex. STDs can be
caused by bacteria such as in the
cases of gonorrhea, syphilis, and
chlamydia, or parasites like in
trichomoniasis, or by viruses such as
in human papillomavirus (HPV).
Herpes simplex virus (HSV) and
human immunodificiency virus (HIV).
In the Philippines, the
most common STDs are
syphili HPV, HSV and HIV. A
total of 69, 512 HIV cases
have been reported to the
HIV/AIDS & ART Registry of
the Philippines. Majority
of the cases were among
the males aged 25-34
years old.
People at risk for sexually
transmitted diseases (STDs)
are those who engage in
unprotected sex, have multiple
sexual partners and misuse
alcohol and drugs. To
eliminate the risk of acquiring
STD, it is advised to avoid risky
behaviors. Sexual abstinence
is the best kind of protection
for those who are not in a
committed relationship.
Stigma is a major barrier in STD
preventice and control. It is
necessary to promote awareness
and encourage infected individuals
to seek for testing and treatment.
Symptoms of STD may include
painful or frequent unusual
discharge from the penis or vagina
and fever al STDS may occur without
any symptom.
